Winter camo stock

I picked up some paint and some stencils when I was in Vancouver recently..I have been thinking about do ing a winter camo look on my 223 Stevens, after seeing RobMc's forest camo Stevens..

So I played around with a old synthetic stock, a MDL 70 Winchester take off from my 300WSM..

Not bad for afirst attempt, I guess. Not perfect, but not too bad.

BTW, did you get the trigger figured out? I sent you a couple of links on adjusting it.

This stock I started with is black.

I think with the Stevens, which is kind of blue, I am going to stencil on some black leaves, then "dust" it with white, to obscure much of it.

Then I'll start from dark brown and then olive green and then khaki, so the lighter colours keep layering over the dark.

Finish it off with another 'dusting' of white, and it should be good, and even have suitable 'depth.'

It's pretty fun, almost like I am doing art again...

Sounds like you like the Stevens you've got. I think I am in the middle of purchasing one in the exchange in .223 (as long as I hear back from the seller and I was the first to make an offer). Anything special I should know about these guns? Are they all synthetic stock? I'm thinkin I'll snow-camo it as soon as I get it as you've planned. Anyways, you did a good job and all the reading on the Stevens 200 really sounds pretty good for a nice little varmint addition.....

I always saythe same about he Stevens: It's a great bargain.

I wouldn't replace n eof my nicer hunting rifles with a Stevens, and I originally bout the 223 for a cheap plinker, but now that coyote season is here, I started thinking...

I'd reccomend the Stevens to someone, as long as they understand they are gettign a great deal on an inexpensive rifle, and are not buying a top of the line rifle.

I wonder if that is correct. I haven't adjusted a Savage before, that I can rememebr..

The new Accu-Trigger is different, of course, but the old Savage trigger and the Stevens 200 triggers are identical.

I'd reccomend the Stevens to someone, as long as they understand they are gettign a great deal on an inexpensive rifle, and are not buying a top of the line rifle.

Agreed, they are a great deal! Both of my 200 triggerss are now right at three pounds and break clean as a whip with no creep. The 223 Rem is shooting just a tad over 1/2" groups, the 300 Win just a bit less than an inch.

Sounds like a good deal to me. Looks like I ended up beeing the lucky guy to buy the rifle. I've been lookin for a good varmint gun for a while, and for a rifle that I'm not afraid to pull the stock off and paint, you cant go wrong for the price. Although it would be nice to have a really 'high end' varmint gun, for all purposes you can pay for the gun with a season of 'yote hunting. I'm pretty excited to see the gun and see how it shoots. Are all Stevens the synthetic stock or did they make a wood stock as well?
