Have a week to kill over March Break and thinking of going for winter caribou, apparently its open till April for some places in Quebec Labrador.

... anyone ever try and any outfitters you recommend??

Labrador does not offer a non-resident hunt anymore...the heard is depleted too much. There are tons of outfitters in Quebec, but from what I have heard, Club Chambeaux is one of the best.

I went to Nouchimi for years, but I hear they sold to Mirage, just past Polaris River. We always drove up to LG 4 That's the 4th Power Dam on the LeGrande River.Always limited out, we always left North Bay Nov. 25th 2 day drive, 3 day hunt, 2 day drive back. FOND MEMORIES

if the caribous are there Mirage is top notch I even prefer them in the fall especially since Luc is back at the helm ... for the last few years the road sometimes was not that long only up to Radisson ....

I ve guided with Chambeaux and that not will be an outfitter I will recommend to say the least. pm if you want to know more. I ll suggest not recommending a location without having first hand experience.

all the best.

for the herds the drop affects very much Quebec so better to wait before going again there ... surprises may be not what you want as bagging ...

All I have to say is if you're on snowmobiles, be aware of your location - stay well away from the zone borders.

Two of my deer-camp buddies had a trip booked through a Quebec outfitter for October. The outfitter contacted them in late September and told them that the Quebec Government had drastically reduced all outfitter tags this year and that their hunt was effectively cancelled. Small print in their contract stated that in such a situation, no refund would be given but rather a makeup date at a later time... So instead of losing over $3K each they opted for a 2014 hunt date and are hoping that the tag situation improves.

If Donat Asselin is still in business stay very far away from that camp. Terrible service and dirty accommodation. Quality of his offered hunts and facilities was also mis represented in photos on his web site. Mirage is good and Nouchimi was good too. I did not know Mirage bought out Nouchimi. Nouchimi offered remote cabins for self hunts. The cabins were a long way in so be ready for some driving.

They're not as good eating in the spring but it's convenient to get one or two around then to top up the freezer through the summer. Not sure if any outfitters offer hunts in March as the bulls will have shed their antlers by then which wouldn't appeal much to the hunters from the South. That said, you never know if you don't ask.

Yes really miss the hunt hope fully it will make a come back in time.
PS what part of lab are you in ?

I really hope they do make a come back. Even in the times when the didn't come close enough for a hunt, we could always pick some up from the butcher shop in Goose Bay or get relatives to send us a meal or two. I really miss it!

I'm up on the North Coast. What about yourself?

Couldn't agree more. We stayed with him in 2012 and his operation is a complete scam. The only thing that resembled the promise was the 2 caribou tags. I agree with you about Mirage and we will be going there next year if the hunt is still on.
