Still seeing deer in Manitoba this spring,but the numbers are shrinking,along with the weight of the animals.Probably will be a small fawn crop.It seems like we have had snow forever.Still see lots of mature ones,but the fawns are having the toughest go.
 
Long hard winters are horrible on the fur.

Sad story indeed!

I have heard the tales of never ending winter in Sask and Manitoba ....... Poor animals....... Makes you wonder how any survive these conditions. Some areas have just passed the 6 month point of constant snow..... and still snowing.

Will be a long time for deer numbers to recover...... if ever.

Northern and east central Alberta aren't looking much better. It's going to be some tough deer hunting across the prairies for the next few years.
 
Hopefully the powder burners will take after the Wiley's and the bigger brothers.
Wouldn't hurt if the bear population took to the wall either.
 
I hear there's a lot of winterkill in Manitoba this year. The limit was one deer last year.....this year limit of 0.5?:p
 
And we are getting more snow as I type here, and this past week we broke a number of record lows. I saw 6 mulies yesterday....they looked like something off the Walking Dead. They should just close the season in areas that are hard hit with snow. No point in decimating deer herds in hard hit areas.
 
Come to Western Alberta to fill your tags boys! There was a pretty substantial winterkill, however, the breeding population has more than made up for it in the last few years. I see (on average) 50-60 whitetails a day if I'm working in the rurals, and usually 10-12 right in town (not to mention moose). Maybe we should look at some type of re-location program.....
 
Ugly. Gonna have to take a hike around my stomping grounds and see what's up. Got me worried now. This past season wasn't too bad for hunting but the year before was pretty crappy. This looks like another poor season starting up, hope we don't end back up at 'bucks only'. One deer limit is bad enough. Maybe we can wipe out a few more yotes before fawning to give them a hand.
 
I received some information from a Fish and Wildlife Officer and a County Constable today in northern Alberta, where I hunt, that the deer are doing quite well. Dispite the deep snow and cold temperatures the deer survived quite well do date. Some promising news for the deer and maybe a good hunting season this year..............I hope.
 
I thought is might be CWD thats killing all the deer where I go to shoot yotes, because cant deer just live off of bales till the snow melts?
