Cold air is very dry. Warm air naturally always has more moisture. It's condensation of water out of the warm air onto the cold metal of the gun that creates problems. Leave the gun cold or warm them completely when taking out of the cold. And if the temperature varies, the metal will act as a heatsink, or coldsink, and water will condense on it for sure. Simple physics. A good covering with oil, wax, or grease will protect the metal, on the outside anyway. Personally never had an issue with that seriously affecting the bore, but it could happen for sure.
 
The warming of the steel is not really what causes condensation. Warm air can hold more water in a vapour form than cold air. As the warm air in the truck comes in close contact with the cold steel it cools and has its ability to hold moisture reduced. The moisture then precipitates out onto the steel where it will freeze if the steel is below 0°c. This moisture (in the truck example) comes from the breathing and damp clothes as stated earlier.
