wish there was more 7.62x39 ARs?

Just wondering, am I the only one here that wishes there was more selection in 7.62x39 ARs?

I know BushMaster and DPMS used to make some but it looks like they are discontinued and the PWS piston one that Questar has is pretty pricey.

I am not saying the 7.62 is a better caliber than 5.56(or 223) but just for the fact that the ammo is so much cheaper. It would be nice to be able to go shoot a few hundred rounds without having to spend so much money. Plus I do like the 7.62x39 caliber.

Anyone feel the same way as I do?
 
I haven't heard much of the TNW rifles and a quick google search revealed pretty poor reviews. How accurate are they? Most of the reviews stated very rough finishes and a very "cheap" look. Never really read much on function though.
 
7.62x39 AR is not a good idea because the AR magazine well is straight and the 7.63x39 round is tapered.
AK magazines are banana shaped while AR magazines are much straighter.

Combine the 2 together and you get feeding problems.
 
Haven't the mag problems been figured out by companies yet? I find it hard to believe that a $2200 PWS piston gun would not be reliable. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one.

No idea - never saw a reliable review in Canada.

it is not an issue when you are only limited 5 round mags ;)

Hell yes. I would love a 10.5" 7.62x39 upper. I PM'd Farmboy asking about the NEA uppers OST are building but he never responded, so I assume they are only available in 5.56.

In theory. But only in 16" barrel length and they have been sold out for some time now, like a lot of things that are listed on their site.

True. If we had no mag limits and full auto, mag design would matter a lot more to us.

The only thing as retarded as a 7.62x39 AR is one running with a piston.
Why would you spend the amount of money you need to to get one running, just to run crappy, corrosive surplus through it?

Do yourself a favor: buy a VZ-58 ( the short barreled one with a chrome bore), mags and a stack of crated ammo.... They run like a top, are way more durable and reliable than any AR set up for that round, as accurate as the ammo will allow, and are considerably cheaper than a conversion for an AR.
 
I all ready own a CZ-858 and do love it but I think the AR would be a lot of fun as well. The way things are going it looks like an AR in 223 will be the only option.
 
I think this is sort of vapourware, lots of talk but not much production, but the idea is interesting.

The magwell is interchangeable, to use correct mags when doing a calibre change.
 
The answer beltfed is cost of centerfire ammo for practice and terminal ballistics in anything with a short barrel. Although the usefulness of downrange performance is a non issue here in canuckistan the generally accepted fact remains that 7.62x39 is superior to 5.56 in just about every way out of a short barrel. And did I say cheap?:)
 
If one is concerned with terminal ballistics (in a range toy no less)...The AR conversions that run this round do not have good track records for reliability....
 
I personally would save the money from a 7.62x39 upper and buy a basic reloading kit, dies and a hell of a lot of components. You would probably be farther ahead financially. At 20-25 Grains of powder per case, plus cheap bullets......5.56 is not really expensive to reload.

great for people who have the time to reload, not so great for those that dont
 
I personally have a NIB Colt 16" flat top complete upper in 7.62x39 upper. I bought this when I worked at Milarm years ago when Colt was clearing these out as they dropped production. Haven't put any rounds through it yet and probably won't but I just can't seem to justify selling it. Evertime I am cleaning and organizing my safes at home Dianne spots it and gets excited about selling it but for the time being I hide it way in the back. Phil.
