So before I spend a bunch of $$ on what seems to be a rare version of the Ruger Gunsight Scout in 6.5CM (would put an XS rail on it so a full scope could be used), I am just wondering what the other options are for a handy pronghorn rifle that I could also use on deer.

My wishlist right now includes 6.5CM, detach mag, non-heavy barrel to keep weight down, and if possible, threaded barrel (but I can live without the threaded barrel.) I like my current gunsight scout in .308 so I am leaning towards that, but if there is another rifle out there that meets my wishlist I am happy to hear about it :) Thoughts?

Threaded for what? No point in threading a Creedmoor hunting rifle.

I like the scout rifle, but chambering it for 6.5 Creedmore makes little sense to me... like the recent run of M77 International rifles in .260 Rem... why?

I would be more inclined to go with a standard rifle with 22" barrel for the Creedmore. The platform lends itself well to a .308 Win chambering or a .223 as a truck gun or ranch rifle.

A precision cartridge deserves a precision platform.

Having said that... the new limited run camo versions are a nice looking, handy rig... so why not a 6.5 CM??? I don't think you will find a better option with your criteria, so jump on this one.

Howa Alpine Mountain Rifle. Meets all your criteria except the threaded muzzle. PR has one in 6.5 same price as the Ruger GS.

I bought one from them in 243 for coyotes. Weight under 6 pounds, compact with the 20" barrel and comes with hinged floorplate AND detachable magazine kit with 5 round mag. 10 round mags are available.

Not to mention it has a top quality stock and the rifle itself is Cerakoted.

For a light compact stalking rifle, I couldn't be any happier.

Can't really thread a pencil barrel for 5/8x24 so skip that part.

OP clearly stated: "but I can live without the threaded barrel".

The Howa Alpine still fits his criteria and will be a much nicer rifle compared to lugging around the heavy Ruger GS and as others have mentioned there is really no need for a brake on a 6.5

Another good option would be a Tikka t3x CTR with the 20" barrel. It meets all his criteria and it is not as heavy as it looks. The barrel is more of a medium heavy profile and the stock is light enough to make up for the little extra meat on the barrel. It's also priced less than the Ruger GS

Some great stuff coming out of this thread, that Tikka t3x CTR looks pretty nice too with an extra 2" of length over the GSS. I may have to see if I can handle one to see how it balances. Admittedly the threaded barrel on the wishlist is just for LCF!

Standard Tikka T3X would be a great choice too, it is light, accurate and has the detachable mag. I have two Tikka rifles right now and have had many others, probably my favourite rifle platform.

Bergara has some nice stuff in 6.5CM. ive got the HMR in 6.5CM with detachable mag, great trigger and threaded barrel. but thats prob a little heavier than what youre looking for. they have lighter hunting models but then you might not get detachable mag and threaded barrel. worth a look either way!

^^^ At 9.25lbs and with a 24" barrel the Bergara HMR doesn't fit in the "light and handy" category. I wouldn't class it as a hunting rifle although Bergara tries to pass it off as one

Which was pretty much covered off already. It's also got a 22" barrel in the short action calibres, not 24". The BMP is the one with the 24" barrel.

There's also the B14 Hunter at 22" and 7.5 lbs, or the B14 mountain rifle at 22" and 6.2 lbs, both available in 6.5 CM.
