WK180C Owners Thread

Took the gun to the range first time after bolt replacement. Few observations/issues
  • Total round count - 250
  • FTEs: 3; a piece of the bolt broke off right next to the extractor, not sure at what round count, see pic below
  • Cycling issues: 2 (both times with Hera mags), LAR (polymer and steel) and steel (5/30) mags no issues. Could be related to the issue above. One Hera mag consistently kept dropping out, I'm also checking my mag release to make sure there's no issue there. Its an Odin Works ambi release.
  • Screw in bolt handle stayed in place, no movement, didn't use any thread locker, installed on the left side
  • Checked to make sure the piston rod is OK every mag change, no issues
  • I have a TNA fake can on my gun and it decided to come loose after 100 or so rounds. Going to clean up and put some thread locker on it. Just in case. Never happened before, but I had to take it off to get the broken piston out - maybe I didn't torque it right

Back to KD and Owen for a replacement I guess.

Okay I just don't get it. My buddy has one of the very first 180s made. Over a thousand rounds thru it with only the extractor spring needing to be upgraded with an AR spring. All these problems but he has had no issues. Why? Were the early bolts and pistons that different?

I didn't have a single issue with the original bolt and carrier with the magnetic handle. I replaced the extractor spring and all was well but I reached out to KD to see if they will replace my bolt if it is under recall and also to get the piston rod. I got both, a new rod and a new bolt and carrier, issues only now after the replacement arrived.

Early rifle with just over a thousand rounds through it? Doesn't sound like it gets used all that often, and/or pretty minimal rounds through it when it does.

Springs and small wear items notwithstanding, over 10 thousand trouble-free rounds is what one should expect from a rifle like this before a maintenance schedule that sees other wear items such as barrel and possibly bolt replacement is initiated.

Yeah he doesn't shoot it much. Some guys have only 300 hundred rounds and problems?? His ACR bolt completely destroyed itself under 1000 of 556?

My initial range report.

  • I will change the trigger.
  • Extractor issues at 100 rounds

It shoots as expected. I run a vortex sparc and it’s suitable for the rifle.
A few minor kinks to work out. Springs. Maybe better ejection. Otherwise it’s a good rifle.

Quick update: Talked to Owen, he's sending me a new bolt, but wants the damaged bolt back for testing. Should get it by Monday. He says he hasn't seen only one lug breaking on the bolt, usually all of them break due to pressure?

Not sure why he would say that. because they just replaced my bolt with the exact same breakage.

If you send in the whole BCG for them to replace the bolt, i would advise taking it apart and reassembling when you get it back.
The long story:
When i reinstalled the new BCG in my rifle, i did a function check and dry fired it. and then the firing pin got stuck and i can't pull the BCG back so the bolt is stuck in the chamber. i pulled the firing pin retaining pin out from the side and the firing pin is still stuck in there somehow. i emailed Owen about it and there was no reply (that was 9 days ago). i tried to disassemble the whole upper taking off the barrel nut to see if i can jiggle the barrel enough to free it to no avail. i ended up just sticking a flatblade screw driver in between the chamber and the BCG and prying it back... there was a risk of damage but the rifle is no good to me with the bolt stuck there anyway, so i gave it a good push and the BCG finally freed and the firing pin and spring just shot out the back from the spring pressure.
After i reassembled the BCG, i did another function check and it worked just fine. I don't know what the firing pin was hung up on, but I'm suspecting something wasn't assembled correctly.

I called Owen directly 3 days after I sent the email in. He did say he was backed up on emails but pulled up my email while I was on the phone, setup the order to ship the bolt to me - I am guessing its only the bolt that's coming and not the carrier. I was at the range last week, so I wasn't in a rush to receive it, but it worked better for me when I called Owen instead of waiting for the emails to be caught up. YMMV if you do call him.

I will however, keep in mind what you said above when I install the bolt into the carrier. So in a way, I am disassembling the carrier to reinstall. Bolt is on its way, will be here on Tuesday next week as per CP tracking. I will have to send the damaged part though and he is sending me a label for it along with the new bolt.

I received my bolt today. Just the bolt. I have to reuse everything else from the current bolt and carrier. There was also the small o-ring to install in the ejector included. I'll set this up and plan for a range trip.

Not to derail things, just got one second hand, threaded bolt handle and shell deflector. Is there any way to tell what my barrel twist rate is? The website says 1:7 OR 1:8 OR 1:9.... plus mine was Krypton painted.

on mine it's stamped right on the barrel. "5.56 NATO 1:8"
