"The WK180C-Steel uses the same design as the WK180C, but with a machined steel upper receiver and a flared cocking similar to the original design. While slightly heavier than WK180C at 3.66 kg (just over 8 lbs.) unloaded, the rugged design ensures that it is able to take a beating. The rest of the construction remains the same as our original rifle and all parts are interchangeable except the: cocking handle, bolt carrier, and upper receiver."

The older style cocking handle should prevent the breaking and flying out of the screw-type one, plus the steel upper should prevent erosion by the BCG and cocking handle. Interesting variant. Available at one of the site vendors, search for link, likely to be at more in limited quantities. I would be curious how much more time it takes to make the steel upper compared to the aluminum one.

They really need to close that ugly gap but if this thing can surpass 1k rounds without handle break then it may be worth.

Reports from people who ordered the original magnetic handle and BCG for their WK indicate it is a dependable setup. Having the steel upper should solve the cosmetic erosion, so the WK180C-Steel should work nicely.

Wish they made them out of stamped steel like the originals .
Would be lighter & less expensive

Yep. Likewise brother.

I remember when they announced the start of this project years back, they were looking for initial feedback on customer demands and expectations.
That was my number one suggestion.
Stamped steel upper and lower.18.5" Good quality pencil barrel.
More durable. Lighter. Set up may be a bit more pricey but once you're set up you can slam them out like f*cking corndogs at the fair.....
Was hoping to see a faithful re-issue of the old AR180 with an 18.5" barrel and slight ergonomic upgrades. Railed handguard and bolt on receiver rail or whatever to appease the "gadgets make me shoot better" types.

What I ended up experiencing was...….total and utter #### hahahaha
Back to the good old SKS shortly after that venture for this guy lol

I would sooner pay more for quality. Buy once cry once. SKS however is an anomaly in our reality, if someone actually made a brand new rifle of same qualities, reliability etc it would be a lot more than $500. Maybe just speaking from my experience with my’48 with is flawless.

I wonder if it would be worth it to make a stamped steel upper die at this point? There doesn't seem to be an issue with having the lower in aluminum. I guess it would depend how many new 180 rifles remain to be sold, and how much of a market their would be for people wanting to swap their WK's upper.

Not at the volumes they sell them. Stamping dies are insanely expensive. Stamping is only economical at high volume. In the tens of thousands volume.

They'd be better off going the route of the Leader T2 and use off the shelf rectangular steel tubing. Heck, toss it in a tube laser and they could spit them out by the dozens for next to nothing.

But you'd all still find something to complain about.

Even better!
Man that would be f*cking bad ass....
Just hard as #### Square tubing upper receiver, barrel trunnion pressed and rivetted, bolt rails welded in and irons sights etc welded on! Mill out the cuts for the bolt handle and mag feed and hammer.
Make the lower out of ####ing plastic for all I care or leave it aluminum.
Make it light, make it cheap and make it reliable! Hell I'd pay $1500 all day for a rough bad ass rifle like that if it was simply reliable.

Yet people complain about $1500 for a machined all aluminum gun, that doesn't come with all the issues of a 'pressed, rivetted and welded' barrelled receiver, let alone all the hand assembly or fixtures required for that sort of assembly and manufacturing.

A rifle made out of Home Depot square tubing shouldn't cost $1,500!!! Why are people so willing to get gouged? Have the damn parts made in China if necessary!

Have the damn parts made in China if necessary!

Already got the T97.
The whole premise of the Whiskey Kilo was to offer a homegrown solution.
Chinese subcontracting is notorious for crap QC, unless you invest heavily in oversight.
Only worth it if you have serious economy of scale, which ain't happening here.
The T97 is made by a government entity that has national pride at stake.
A small scale subcontractor won't give a rats @$$ about what you get.
