WMR or HMR

I'm a big fan of .22WMR, but am starting to get discouraged at the price of the ammo these days. Seems not that long ago I was paying about $12.50 for 50 rounds. Just bought some Remington Accu-tip (looks like V-Max) 33 gr. for $16.50 to try out. Just got another quote this week for $18 for the same stuff~the most I've ever seen any rimfire ammo. I don't know whether or not the rifle will like it any more than the other ammo I've tried but at that price, I sort of hope not!

On the flip side, it seems that .223 (my other varmint gun) is holding steady cost-wise, maybe even dropping a little if you look around. The .22 WMR lacks the punch/flat shooting of any centerfire round, but has it's place I think. Great varmint gun out to about 100-125 yards. (wouldn't shoot a coyote beyond about 75 with it though) Not as noisy, still less expensive to shoot, etc. I think they're different "animals" so to speak.

I use my .22 for light carry in the woods, 17 hmr for varmint. 300 win mag for the rest.
Maybe on day I'll get a precision 223... bah.

I use the 22mag for ditch whacking coyotes and shooting around livestock areas as its way quieter then my 2506.
Its a lot better in the wind as well. Remington accutips max out the price range but the hornady fodder is still $13/50 or so. I use an old mossberg chuckster. I'd like a new savage heavy barrel but my old mossy is to accurate to sell

I have a 17hmr and have never really been that struck with it. was thinking of trying the 22wmr or should I just get a 204
Small game and varmint some plinking would be the usage.

If small game hunting is included in your usage (Rabbits, Hares, Grouse, Squirrels???)... then any centerfire, including .22 Hornet is too much gun... actually in most circumstances HMR is too much gun... we prefer LR or HM2 for small game hunting... and we are growing fonder, and fonder of our HM2's... for varmints (gopher's???), any centerfire caliber is on the table... if you are shooting ALOT you might want one of the low recoil rounds, the two Hornets, .204 Ruger, .223, .22/250, .220 Swift, etc...

Personally, I think that you should stick with the Hummer for awhile... try the XTP Gamepoint 20 grain rounds... they stay together better... and shoot more accurately out of our guns... if you do change, it makes more sense to move up to centerfire for varmints and drop down to LR for small game.
