Just got back from a week in heaven (at least for me) hunting up at my bud's place between Haliburton and Minden. The weather gods were cooperative (1 rain day), and the country was lovely. Only problem, no deer!!! None of the usual runs or trails had any new sign, the trail cam picked up a trespassing moose hunter, and some dead shots. The one scrape run I found hadn't been revisited since it was scraped. I'm told that the wolf problem there is very severe, and I heard the pack howling in the evening & morning when I was up 2 weeks prior to the hunt. Has anyone else been equally skunked there for the same reason? On the Wed. when I was heading out to my watch position, I stared a deer in the bush to my right. I couldn't get eyes on it, and it headed over toward my buddy. He saw it was a young doe, but couldn't get a clean shot, and that was the only deer we saw at all in 2 weekends of scouting and a week of hard hunting. Didn't even see any wild turkey. The only wildlife I saw was 2 partridge, and the usual red squirrels. Don't get me wrong...for me a day in the woods is worth a week in the city, but it would have been nice to have some venison on the table. The chap in the sporting goods store in Haliburton told me the deer hunting had been poor in that area to date. I'm under the impression that a wolf (or yote) pack is in the area and has moved everything off it's normal routine and routes. Let's bring back the bounty! If any other fellow hunters are in that area, I hope you had better luck than us. Ah well, there's always next year.

Hey Lawrence,

I'm heading to WMU 54 tomorrow morning, I'll let you know how I do, I have to get back by wednesday, but heading back up on Thursday, I hope to the Yotes drove them down to my spots, too bad about your hunt. Let me know if you are up for some Yotes I have a great spot by Orangeville!

I live between Haliburton Village and Minden. Found a number of scrapes, not really active, few fresh tracks. Only one rub. Little sign of any real activity. Maybe because it is just so mild. Two days when I returned home (live 1 1/4mi. from where I hunt) there were deer in my yard. Did run into a fine cow moose and calf this morning. We stood and looked at each other for about 30 seconds before they moved away. Few grouse, only flushed one today, a couple at the beginning of the week. Only a few shots heard.
I have heard that deer are being taken over in the Bancroft area.

My hunt camp is in area 56. Our moose hunt was terrible, we only saw 6 cows all week between 14 guys. We had a bull tag only. Grouse populations are low, very low. But I can't say the same about the deer population. I will be in deer hunting this weekend, but if our moose hunt was any indication, it should be a good hunt. We saw 34 deer during the moose hunt. Thats a lot of deer. I know that many camps around ours haven't had a great deer hunt so far though. Ah well, just nice being in there, but this year for sure is a strange one,

Patrick

I have hunted 56 for 30 years off and on. I hunt over between Madill and Tory Hill and the south end of Koshlong Lake. Our family had a cabin there but had to sell it. Love those woods. Don't know if I can make it down there this year. Sunday hunting there this year is a first - cool.

i hunt in 56.. it was a tough week.. populations are down thats for sure. the wolves are defiantly having their way.. i heard them 2-3 times over the week .... i did manage 2 nice bucks but out of 9 guys we only managed 3 deer for the week... other camps around us did the same or worse

I hunt in 63 & there is definitely less deer than usual. We took a nice 8 point & a button buck. I know there are at least 2 more bucks on the property, but I'm inclined to leave them alone this season. Already have a bear & part of a moose in the freezer so I don't really need the venison. Hope we have a mild Winter.

George
