The title pretty much says it all. I just got my outdoors card and I was wondering where I would be able to find a guide or chart or something listing all the caliber restrictions in the different WMU's. I was looking at the Ministry's site and I can't find anything that tells me. By the way I plan on hunting deer in WMU 56, I took a look through my regulation's summery as well as googling caliber restrictions to no avail.

It's all in the Ontario Hunting Regs Summary.

It is set out by county/municipalities, not by WMU's.

And it is for small game only.

dont get the .275 reg... a .243 will go as far as a .338 wm.... both will hurt.. thank god i live in alberta... the land that you need a .300wm to kill a deer.. a small one at that

Deer is small game? Many area's in Ontario restrict either the size of calibre you can use or shotgun only for deer hunting. I have not seen this information in the Hunting Regs other then the info for Controlled Hunt area's.

I can only assume the place to find the proper information for your specific Municipality is from your Municipality itself.

I've also heard sometimes Municipality's only restrict you to shotguns during deer season, but then will allow you to use a rifle for say coyotes. I'm trying to find this information for myself in the Barrie area.

No, deer is not small game. If you read the regs, you will discover that in those areas where calibre is restricted, you may not hunt deer with a rifle. At all. Period.
The calibre restriction is strictly for small game.
If you follow these links, you will find a WMU map and you can check the WMU numbers in the Barrie area. Then check the other reg for whitetail seasons by WMU (pg 58 and 62). The right hand column lists resrictions; you will see that virtually that entire area is "Bows and muzzle-loading guns only."

I know deer is not small game... I was being a smartass. I misunderstood Waterfowlers post and the regs. My bad. :D

I am aware of the WMU's around Barrie, and have applied for the contolled shotgun/muzzle loader season. I was successful with a bow only antlerless tag for 76. What I'm trying to find out is if I can hunt coyotes around Barrie, with a rifle.

What I did find in the regs on page 71 is:

"The holder of a small game licence may not use a rifle of greater calibre than .275, except a flintlock or percussion cap muzzle-loading gun, for hunting small game in the counties of Brant, Elgin, Essex, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Northumberland, Oxford, Perth and Wellington and the regional municipalities of Chatham/Kent, Durham, the former regional municipalities of Haldimand-Norfolk and Hamilton-Wentworth, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York and the City of Toronto."

I'm just thinking Municipalities might have their own rules as to distance from town a firearm can be used, and what type.

*** Just so im not totally hi-jacking OP's thread: When you look at the links Kilo posted, the WMU you will be deer hunting does not seem to be a restricted area. I will be hunting in 57 during rifle season.

Read the hunting regs.

Posted to soon...I see you found it.

Gotta draw the line somewhere. And I'd rather it at .275 then at 22 rimfire.

all i know is find crown land there are no calibre restrictions on crown land except for small game as stated above. I was told by a woman at the ministry that crown land does not fall under any municipal bylaws. I haven't picked up the new regs yet , but just for clarification wolves and yotes are not considered small game ? they are varmints right and do i need a specific tag for either in Ontario ? or can i just use a small game license ? i've only focused on deer an waterfowl so far.

In some parts of Ontario, mainly to the north you need tags for wild dogs..

Be careful with crown land, there are some exceptions. Brighton Wildlife Preserve has some shooting restrictions now I believe.

you need a tag to shoot coyotes anywhere within 4 wmu's of algonquin park i beleive it is.

anywhere else its open season all year round, no bag limit.

i'm down in cayuga, and the largest calibre that can be shot at a varmint is .275, shotgun only for deer or muzzle loader. but there are only 2, 1 week control hunts

and anywhere north of the french river you can hunt deer with rifle?

i've heard that too about the french river or is it highway 89? but the girl i talked to told me i can use any rifle caiber on the crown land i hunt on, as long as its for deer or any big game.

Tags required in northern ontario i believe..

That's wrong I am quite sure. Crown land or not, calibre/gun restrictions for big game apply based on the WMU.

The calibre restriction only applies to small game, and only in the areas listed in the regs.

The only other thing that may affect this is a local municipal bylaw. I do not know of any in Ontario, but I'm sure someone here will.

the land is north of oshawa 10,000 acres

So here it is again....for small game....

North of Oshawa could be WMU 73 and the deer seasons there are limited to shotgun, ML and bow. And I'm quite sure any other WMU's around there don't have a rifle deer season.

she did tell me that calibre restrictions do apply for small game but not big game , and bylaws don't apply to crown land those were her exat words . Sorry if i wasnt clear before .
