WMU Caliber Restriction Guide?

she did tell me that calibre restrictions do apply for small game but not big game , and bylaws don't apply to crown land those were her exat words . Sorry if i wasnt clear before .

10-4, i'm have no idea about that.

But if you don't realize (and maybe you do) big game seasons are laid out by WMU's and cover dates/gun types/etc.

I think it is fairly safe to say, any WMU south of hwy 7 will not have a rifle season for deer. Bears are a different I recently learned. WMU 73 has a bear season and no restriction on firearms.

ok wow i didnt know there were bears there i thought i'd have to go farther, but as i read last year there are rifle seasons for deer on the crown land i hunt cant remeberr the wmu but there is two weeks i believe and no caliber restriction. the rest of the time is bow, and one week that is bow and rifle together maybe it has changed but thats what i saw last year and what i said preivously is what she told me.

If it is just north of Oshawa, I assure you it is a shotgun only season for deer. 2 week shotgun season. The one week season would be for muzzleloader and bow.

PM me the WMU you are talking about if you want, and I can give you exact info from the regs.

Deer seasons and restrictions apply to crownland, based on the WMU the crownland is in.

If you are talking Nonquon or Scugog Island they are both WMU 73 which has SG, ML and bow seasons only. WMU 78's are all controlled shotgun hunt.

The only WMU in the 70's that has a rifle season is 74b I believe which is east and north of Peterborough.

1 week for bow? Our bow season is 3 months down here, only closing for the 2 weeks of shotgun

Its a one week muzzleloader season that allows bows also. That's what I was referring to.

It is set out that way, because you used to be able to buy a tag for that one week season only, bow or ML.

Deer is small game? Many area's in Ontario restrict either the size of calibre you can use or shotgun only for deer hunting. I have not seen this information in the Hunting Regs other then the info for Controlled Hunt area's.

I can only assume the place to find the proper information for your specific Municipality is from your Municipality itself.

I've also heard sometimes Municipality's only restrict you to shotguns during deer season, but then will allow you to use a rifle for say coyotes. I'm trying to find this information for myself in the Barrie area.

I'm also in the barrie area. I have been told you can use any centre fire calibre on coyotes, but I'm not 100 on that. Phone the local MNR guy.

If where you hunt isn't listed here, you can use anything on yotes. If it is, then 270 and less.

"The holder of a small game licence may not use a rifle of greater calibre than .275, except a flintlock or percussion cap muzzle-loading gun, for hunting small game in the counties of Brant, Elgin, Essex, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Northumberland, Oxford, Perth and Wellington and the regional municipalities of Chatham/Kent, Durham, the former regional municipalities of Haldimand-Norfolk and Hamilton-Wentworth, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York and the City of Toronto."

Personally I think if you can decipher the printed hunting regs, it is better than the word of someone at the MNR. Atleast as far as a defence in court, if you find yourself there.
