I did an online check on my application for an antlerless deer tag. This is the 3rd. year in a row that I've been skunked and I'm waiting to find out if at least my buddy was successful or not. There are does all over the place up there and lest it sound like I'm #####ing over sad coincidence, even the locals who live there are complaining about the lack of doe tags when does are literally all over the place. I may contact the ministry, though I fully expect all I'll get is smoke blown up my butt. Personally, I think it was Wynne's liberal government raping of the MNR budget that is the root cause. I don't know how many Ontarians are aware of this, but as I heard it, the liberals took 80 mil. from the MNR budget (our license and hunting fees) and put it into general revenue to try to pay down some of the massive debt they saddled us with. Given their lack of fiscal responsibility and their disdain for hunting and hunters, I believe this. As a consequence though, how can the MNR do deer population suveys? They've had to greatly reduce staff due to the budget cuts and I'll bet they haven't done a proper survey in our WMU or probably any WMU for years. I'll tell ya, I'm not a happy camper!

I have no doubt Wynne took the funds from the MNR. I have real doubt she ever used it to pay down any debt! Sounds like you could use a unified voice (hunt clubs, even OFAH) to lobby the MNR on this issue.

I think that's why they brought out mandatory reporting now.. so they can get some idea of the deer population without actually doing the surveys. So if all the hunters report seeing 10 does to a buck.. you MIGHT get doe tags next year.

Shoot a buck...where there are does there are bucks. Takes both to make more. Does don't clone themselves.
Thank you for stating the obvious. Now, point by point. If you have an antlerless tag, you stand a better chance of putting meat on the table since there are more does than bucks where we hunt. If the rut hasn't started, which in our case has happened several times during rifle season, if you have an antlerless tag, you stand a better chance of putting meat on the table. Bucks are cagier and more cautious than does, If you have an antlerless tag.............., shall I go on?

I get “screwed” every time I buy a lottery ticket as well. It’s a draw, nature of the beast that some are going to be unlucky and some will get lucky

Last year the success rate for a doe tag was 44% in 56. With the slashing of moose tags I am sure a lot more hunters are focusing on deer. I hunt moose in 54 and they dropped the tags in the WMU by 60% this year. I bet when we see the numbers from this year, the success rate of almost all WMU's for doe/shotgun draws will be lower. There are a lot of people who seem to have given up on moose and are going after deer only now. Things are only going to get tougher for the next few years.

I've got news for you - Ford has also decreased MNRFs budget.

Not quite. A frozen budget isn't a reduced budget. OMNRF is in such a mess,it'll take a year long audit just to see how much actual damage was done by the previous Liberal regime. McGuinty/Wynne sold off a ton of OMNRF assets in an attempt to raise money to finance pie-in-the-sky socialist programs without getting nailed to the wall for raising taxes even more. Some of that was obvious while systemic fiscal damage in areas most people don't about were deliberately hidden from opposition and public scrutiny. The only other ministry that was as affected by those tactics was the Ministry of Transport.

Don't want the disappointment of not drawing a tag? Apply in areas with higher success rates or simply accept that lower population densities result in fewer tags being available.

Some also fail to realize that just because their buddies bush is full of deer it doesn't mean the rest of the WMU is the same so they cannot understand why there's no tags available. They're doing an excellent job in WMU 90 and 91. 100% success rate and extra tags available when populations need to be decreased.

Hunters not getting tags suggests managers are doing their job. If they weren't, they'd simply give everyone a tag and hope for the best....

I agree with you 100%. I was making fun of the OP thinking he was screwed in what is nothing but a game of chance
