Wolf 7.62x39 154gr SP

I shot my first 2 moose with Norinco SP (I hit the Cow about 100 yards it ran down into a gully, Then the Calf at about 50 yards ( one hit to the neck ,dropped like an rock) While I was gutting Calf ,buddy walked down where Cow went gave a holler saying she was layed out, When we cut her up I found the bullet lodged in her spine (neck area)

It's not the cal. It's all about shot placement.......
Not that I would use a 7.62X39 on a moose...unless I had to.

Why are people freaked out on the ammo for moose? Weren't bows and arrows, rocks and spears used long time ago on moose?

Well it's been a while but I think I'm going to try it on a white tail this year. The ruger M77 stainless in 7.62x39 is just begging to go hunting so I got to try it out. It will be the first time I've hunted without my 338win in years, it'll be nice to see the deer in the scope after I pull the trigger insted of the normal 338 what the #### happened and did I hit it or not after the blast ;)

I took my 12 year old lad out with his CZ 527 in 762x39 last saturday. We cant get that in SP here so I loaded some sierra .311 125 gn to 2490 fps. We check zeroed but Doe season isnt until 1st November here and that is all we saw all morning! I think it was 26.7 gns of Vit N120 I think!

I think that I'll pass on the wolf for now. I just tried some factory federal 123gr SP and it is fantastic for accuracy. Just under 1moa at 200m in the Ruger M77 mk2 :)

Ok, just shot a deer with the 123gr Fed ammo and it rocked. Approx 200m from the top of one side of a step colluee to the the other side. Waited for the deer to climb the colluee and when it stopped angled/quartered away from me I slipped the bullet in just behind the last rib on the right side and it passed through the chest cavity and out of the left shoulder. Deer bolted about 50m and dropped dead. The lungs where toast, but there was no blood trail or meat damage. Other than the lack of blood trail I'd say this round was perfect result. I'm very staisfied that this Ruger M77 Mk2 in 7.62x39 with the Fed 123sp ammo is a great little deer rifle and will be perfect for my wife to use or for a back up gun for me when I've buggered up my shoulder like right now, crashed my motorcycle a couple of weeks ago and hurt my shooting shoulder... didn't like the idea of shooting my normal rifle right now, 338win, due to the injury. The 7.62x39 is so mild to shoot anyone could use it with out fear and as an added bonus it doesn't make my ears ring like the 338win always does when I shoot it with out ear protection.

I was torn between using my CZ 527 or my 1917 BSA in .303 with the same sierra 125 gn 311 pills. I took the 303 and bagged a nice Fallow Doe, I guess there'll still be time for the CZ. we cant buy factory sp ammo here for that calibre as it isnt deer legal. Handloading just gets it to 1700 ft lbs of ME so that is the only way we can use it. The Russian 20 round civilian packets fill my bore with potatoes for weeks after. So I dont bother with that anymore. Still be able to get out on my farm next week as I only have 1 day planned in london next week.

I did use the Federal ammo insted of the wolf... when it gave me a five shoot 1.8" group at 200m how could I not ;)

And yes I reload but haven't done the 7.62x39 yet due to lack of brass. If I could find a bunch of good brass I'd buy it and get to it. I want to work up a good 150gr or maybe even a 180gr load so that it could be used as a general bush and camping safety gun.

I use Sellier & Bellot brass. Not bad, I think about 1 in 50 primers fail to seat properly using a hand primer. I stick to the one on my Redding Boss press now. nothing fails when that goes!
For unannealed brass I havent had any split at the neck yet even with the big Vit loads.

The 7.62x39 will do anything that a 30-30 Winchester will do. If you keep your range within reason, 150 m, it's more than adequate. The most important thing as was mentioned above is shot placement.

Some of the SKS rifles are sadly lacking in the accuracey department. It's up to the hunter to decide if his/her rifle is adequate.

A 458 Weatherby mag will wound a moose just a badly as a 7.62x39 with a poorly placed shot. bearhunter

Quite right! Whilst I'm not advocating rimfires for deer there are occaisions where the .22 centrfires are enough! If like here deer are approaching pest proportions despite year round shooting then I would agree that the 223, 22-250 etc are more than adequate on the smaller does and European Roe etc.
As with most woodland stalking you just cant guarantee that you wont need to take a long shot shot as you cant say that you shouldnt need a scope as they are too close etc!

I must edit to add that I will be using my 762x39 on European deer in woods as I firmly believe it to be enough to do the job!

A cheap source of brass for 7.62x39mm is the WWB 123gr. FMJ loads, about $10 a box. The brass is easily reloadable and you can aquire a good supply of brass fairly cheaply. I did buy about 500 pieces of brass in the states about 15years ago so I am set for my brass needs. Bullets are fairly easy to come by.

As someone else stated, the 7.62x39mm is ballistically similiar to a .30-30, finding a good gun can be a problem, however I have an SKS that will consistantly group under 2MOA at 100m with handloads, even my SKS-D with its 16.5" barrel will group under 2MOA with good handloads.

I've been hunting deer for years now with a Mini 30 and handloaded 124 gr Hornadys. Groups 1.5" @ 100 and drops them fine.. AND you can eat right up to the hole!

Tony

(Mini 30s shoot great with handloads..try it)
