Since it looks like a minimum of 4 years between antelope hunts, I cant justify building a speed goat specific rifle. I will get more chances at wolves, but think a coyote rifle is a little on the lite side for an 80 lb dog. Might be a good excuse to build one gun for both. Opinions please, looking for something Alberta game legal (.23 cal or larger, as the law is written), light enough to pack through the bush in the winter, but with enough weight to be stable when the time comes to stretch it out on that speed goat of a lifetime. Pick a cartridge to chamber it in too,:D

Its built now ;) details at post 98

For my speed goat rifle I was thinking of building a custom 25-300wsm off a Ruger #1.
My donor action sits in the safe as Ruger #1 in 257wby.

Back in the 1960s as a youngster, I used a custom-built 264 Win Mag. for Coyotes and Antelope with very impressive results.
Having traded it away decades ago, I had to have another so with that thought in mind I picked up a new Ruger in 264 from a CGN sponsor, Prophet River Firearms....and for an out of the box shooter it is excellent ! :)

This blueprint in 7mm-08.

I use a .243 for those exact functions.

55gr Bergers for 'yotes. 3600(ish)fps

95gr Noslers for goats. 3100(ish)fps

For wolves, I would use the same load as I would use for goats.

When I was younger (high school an dinto my 20's) I used my .243 for everything.

I personally have taken Many many whitetails, 3 Mule deer, 2 goats and too many coyotes to count with my .243.

IMHO it's a wonderful cartridge for a young prarie boy, and when he gets older, he can become more calibre specific! :D

Cheers!

I have the 243, and it will fill in until i get this project done, i agree it is pretty damn good, but i want something with a little more jam
If you already have a .243 then you have all you are likely to need for a wolf/speedy goat gun. If you want to up the velocity, get a .257 Wby and be done with it.

Has anyone out there created a 6.5m cartridge on a wsm case cause I think that would be an interesting wildcat and fantastic for what you have in mind. 264 win mag velocities in a short action rifle I'm sure it would manage to get the job done.

But I'm inclined to agree with Chuck, 7mm-08 would be my personal choice, just in a rem7600 carbine with a low mounted 1.75-5x scope, but thats just me I like quick and handy guns. Wait, my bad I forgot you're out west, in that case a bolt gun with a 20" medium heavy barrel and a 3-12x scope.
