M1919 Browning.

It was on a range in Suffield, the antlered dog wandered on to the range while we were firing...and both of the guys firing still missed prior to the cease fire being given! Sad but true!

25-06 ai, 6.5-06, 6.5-06 AI, 6.5WSM, 270WSM, 7 rem, I think a 6.5 wsm would be cool, I'm trying hard not to justify one for myself. I would get a new mdl 70 wsm and install an rks barrel.

I think you would want the flattest shooting LR cartridge you can find. You are out west where the shots can be......long.

.25-06
.257 Weatherby
.270
.264 Win Mag

I have heard of a guy who has wild-catted a 6.5 WSM, I am not 100% sure but I think its a 270 wsm or 300 wsm necked down. that would be a neat cartridge to work with, blow the .243 out of the water and something different that not everyone has.

You've got me really looking into the 6.5/06...

For my own safe :)

IMHO 6.5/06 is tough to beat here on the prarie. 6.5 projectiles have excellent ballistic coefficient. They perform well in wind and long range, two common factors in our prarie conditions. 140gr .264 bullets are ideal for deer, antelope, and coyote's and at 2900 fps they shoot flat enough for the long shots and still have enough retained energy to make the kill. The 6.5-06 is right on the heals of the .264 win mag with less powder, less recoil, less muzzle blast, and better barrel life. Compared to the .257 wby with a 120gr bullet the 6.5-06 gives up about 200 fps with a 140gr bullet and aprox. 10 gr less powder. I think that cooper excaliber in 6.5-06 will be an excellent "truck" gun for me and I don't have to worry about messing up any gorgeous wood.

6.5 rem mag is kind of cool looking too, almost identical to the 6.5-06. But Cooper doesn't chamber that one :p

I built a 257 Roberts AI on a Savage action for my Antelope rifle, I used a 26" heavy sporter Shilen barrel and bedded it into a Boyd's thumbhole laminate stock

when I read the thread topic, first thing that popped into my mind was 243 Winchester. 80gr TTSX @ 3400 fps would be the bullet. If you want a bit more jam, 257 Roberts AI or 25-06, with 100gr TTSX or 110gr Accubonds

Tod,

I will play with the TTSX to make the 243 i have be that rifle, but alot here have reaffirmed my gut feeling here with the 6.5-06, a 25 Souper is something i have pondered a time or two as well. I have this weird need to play with all the 308 based rounds out there.
