In the Jan 06 2010 issue of the Eganville Leader.

Julie and Basil Herron, both of whom grew up near Bark Lake near Barry’s Bay, spending many winters there fishing, were attacked by a lone wolf December 31 on their first ice fishing trip of the season. Alone on the lake and hearing the shrill song of a wolf pack waiting in the woods, Mr. Herron used his four-foot-long ice chisel to keep the wolf at bay in a terrifying 10 to 15-minute standoff of gnashing teeth and incessant lunging for his throat. Mrs. Herron, wracked with fear could only watch and keep the family pooch, Lassie, clutched close to her chest awaiting her husband’s -- or the wolf’s -- fate. Fortunately, all parties left the scene unscathed, but the Herrons warn people to be very aware of their surroundings while recreating this winter.

Can you keep a shotgun handy, when out fishing?

When I am "out of doors", I always keep a firearm handy! Hopefully they learned a lesson & now know, IT CAN HAPPEN! I always say it is better to be prepared & never need a firearm, then to need a firearm & not have it! After all, a firearm is one of those things that, if you really need it, NOTHING ELSE WILL DO!

Cheers

Perhaps rabid? Wolf attacks are rare
Sounds like that wolf knew what would hurt him and wasn't all that reckless. Not how I picture a rabid wolf, but I'm no expert.

In my opinion a wolf testing to see if it can eat a human is normal predator behavior.
Maybe it's just trying to be tough like NS yotes.

F*ck yes. I wouldn't be out anyways on the mainland without some bear defense.
I'm sure Ont. has some bs laws you gotta jump through for the COs to leave ya alone though.

lone wolf=hungry,old,maybe sick wolf

no pack to hunt with...harder to get grub.

might have been after the dog not the people...

hard to say since the old fella likely never thought to ask :D

The article mentions a wolf pack...

Maybe;
From the Ontario Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997

“hunting” includes,
(a) lying in wait for, searching for, being on the trail of, pursuing, chasing or shooting at wildlife, whether or not the wildlife is killed, injured, captured or harassed, or
(b) capturing or harassing wildlife,
except that “hunting” does not include,
(c) trapping, or
(d) lying in wait for, searching for, being on the trail of or pursuing wildlife for a purpose other than attempting to kill, injure, capture or harass it, unless the wildlife is killed, injured, captured or harassed as a result,
and “hunt” and “hunter” have corresponding meanings; (“chasse”, “chasser”, “chasseur”)

On the good side we have:

Protection of Property Protection of property
31. (1) If a person believes on reasonable grounds that wildlife is damaging or is about to damage the person’s property, the person may, on the person’s land,
(a) harass the wildlife for the purpose of deterring it from damaging the person’s property; or
(b) capture or kill the wildlife.
Agents
(2) The person may use an agent to harass, capture or kill the wildlife under subsection (1) if the agent has the authorization of the Minister or belongs to a class of agents prescribed by the regulations.
Exceptions
(3) Subsection (1) does not apply to,
(a) a moose, caribou or elk;
(b) a white-tailed deer, unless the person harasses or kills the deer in accordance with the authorization of the Minister; or
(c) other wildlife prescribed by the regulations, unless the person harasses, captures or kills the wildlife in accordance with the authorization of the Minister.

Rebuttal please, can you legally have a loaded shotgun handy when fishing or outdoors?

Why not? I bring my shotgun with me to the fish shack all the time. Small game(snowshoe hare) is open and I often grab the gun on slow fishing days and ride up to an island nearby and hunt bunnies. No law saying you cant have it with you. I also bring it with me in spring on pack in trips where we will be tenting and fishing. Again small game is open, I have a valid license...good excuse to carry and protect ones self!

Thing is - if the deer population is down, the wolf/coyote population must be under severe stress for food. I'm not surprised this event occurred, and I suspect more attacks on humans will follow.

In NS I believe you can only have a shotgun with birdshot if you are not in a hunting season.
Anyone have a reasonable explanation why you can't take a rifle into the woods?

In NS you can hunt coyotes every day (excluding Sunday), any caliber. You have to buy the basic hunting license.
