Wolf attack in Barrys Bay

Wolf attacks - Then and Now.

For years in North America, it was claimed that there were no confirmed attacks by wolves on humans.

Yet European literature for centuries is replete with wolf pack attacks on peasants, sleighs, horses, dogs etc. People were attached and killed just going to the privy, woodpile etc.

WHY?

The answer is that the peasants/poor people did not by law own firearms in most of Europe whereas up until the the the recent past in N.A. most persons if the back country were armed at all times.

Wolves and coyotes in Canada at least, have lost the fear that was ingrained in them over the past centuries.

At our cottage in Quebec, my understanding is that to carry a firearm, one must have a valid hunting licence. And we had bears this August and September along our road raising hell. At least 4 were shot withing 500 metres of our property. Bird feeders were torn down, garbage boxes, some very substantial in size were smashed, ours and all neighbours, we had bear s**t within 25 feet of our fron door.

For this reason, I buy a small game licence as crows, ground hog are always open.

ONION: do you remember about 5-6 yrs ago on the south end of Papineau Lk a pack attacked a hunter during deer season?

I do remenber that.

Just this fall a bow hunter about 15 miles from me was kept up in his tree until 3am. He tired to climbed down a few times, but the wolves wouldn't leave, all the while shouting with no effect.

Kinda makes me nervious when my wife takes the dog out for a walk. You know how far I am from both Bark or Papineau!

And european literature also says beware of witches and burn them on stakes. We're also talking about the same people who systematically "hunted" most of the game on their lands to the point where they didnt exist anymore. Is it much of a stretch to think perhaps they exaggerated some stories, to make the hunt that much more "honourable" and praise worthy?

Sir Charles English has killed the mighty terror of Bleninghamsireville!

Wolf attacks are rare, so are bear attacks for that matter.

But wolves never attack humans!

Must be a hoax....

I recall a story I read as a youngster which asked the question, "If Alaskan wolves are so large and predatory, why were pople never killed by them as were peasants that were attacked by wolves in Europe?" The answer was that the peasants in Alaska carry guns and knives and know how to use them. Apparently Canadian wolves have got the word that this is no longer the case here.

Well maybe the Government will realize the mistakes they have made. This should be publicized as much as possible. Two reasons for this one they have stopped all trapping and hunting of wolves and coyotes in and around Algonquin park and with the lack of feed these last few years caused by increased numbers of predators and harsher winters and a lower than normal deer population these animals are getting desperate.

Just the opposite, the past couple years have been a boon to wolves. Lots of snow + long winters make deer very easy to kill. Why do you think the deer populations are declining? Now, wolves arent the only reason, but they a factor.

Historically Algonquins wolves have fed more on beaver then deer. Deer were pretty much nonexistant in the park up until the 1900s.

The wolf only wanted a doggie snack (lassie).....

there's merit to that statement, and a good reason coyotes don't cross lake ice and wolves do...
When I still ran sled dogs I sold some to a fella around Stanley mission who had lost a few to wolves. He said they took em right off their chains...easy meal when times are tough...

was he hunting with a slingshot ??? i would of shot the dawgs

Not sure if you can have a shot gun. I was reading the posts and believe that the wolves wanted the family dog. I am in SW Ontario and had inertactions with wolves. One was when I was turkey hunting and calling in turkeys and a blonde very large wolf came out of the bush. I thought it was a deer because of the size of it, but my hunting partner also saw it and it was indeed a wolf. We took our shotguns and walked over to where it came out of the bush an walked into the bush about 15 yards. We then heard sounds of what sounded like chain saws, and we backed out the bush. We looked up a wolf growl on the internet and indeed it was a match to the sound we heard. The sound is on youtube under wolf warning growl, which means the next step was an attack. I did some research and read that they are becoming less fearfull of man and I do believe that they will attack. Whether it is because of a family dog sent, or if you are close to a den, or walking through the bush on a trail, it is better to be armed and not use it then be dinner for a pack of dogs.
