Wolf Cartridge

You believe wrong. No caliber restrictions except for bison.

Half true. No rimfire for a lot of things, you can only shoot bobcat lynx and Wolverine with one. No shotgun for moose elk goat or sheep either. All of those can be shot with centrefire rifle, bison is the only one with restrictions relating to bullet weight and energy though (which technically isn't even a caliber restriction).

We’re talking centerfire. “Rimfire” and “shotguns” are not calibers.

A big dog wolf can exceed 125 pounds, bigger than many does. .223 is near perfect for coyotes and with your tougher Nosler bullets will certainly do a decent job on a wolf if you don't push the range too far. Much better for wolves are the .22-250 and the 6 millimeter crew.

As bcsteve says! Also, bullet weight and energy restrictions cannot be met by by lots of smaller calibres. So, it is in fact a calibre restriction and then some more! E.g. the 9.3x57 cannot be used in the YT for Bison unless you handload. The only available (Norma) factory load for 9.3x57 (from TEC) fails the parameters as outlined in YT hunting regs and CANNOT be used for hunting Bison there.

I have shot a fair number of wolves using a 22-250 loaded with 60 grain Partitions. I have also shot them using rifles chambered for a number of .30 and .338 calibre cartridges and one with a 45-70. In short I use whatever rifle I happen to have handy at the time.

They all died.

True. I was simply trying to provide additional info that the OP might find useful, as your response was pretty vague.

OP any centrefire rifle, or shotgun using #1 buckshot or larger is legal for wolf in BC. See page 16 of the synopsis.

Buddy shot a 65 pound wolf near Sheridan Lk. with his 30:06 years ago.
Double lunger and it ran 50 yrds before we found it.
Good thing there was snow on the ground , made following the blood easier.

65lb. wolf is a teenager. Winged an adult one with a .270 WSM, followed by a half mile track through the woods. A little snow but I tracked him mostly by sound, he kept howling for his buddies. :)

Hit them in the right spot. They will go down fast

If you were going to buy a deticated wolf gun. I would be in the 243/6mm range.

If you are a yote guy that may encounter wolves your hot .223” Cals are fine.

When I see a wolf with my 204ruger in hand you better believe I’ll be shooting

I've taken wolves with the 22 Hornet, 30 WCF, and 8x57. If I was to have a dedicated rifle I would like it to be a Brno 21 with a 6mm Remington barrel.

I have shot several wolves with the 6mm Remington, using 75 -95 grain bullets.
This combination, plus a well placed shot, usually drops them where they are, or
possibly after a very short dash.

Shot two wolves with the 220 Swift, using the 55 grain Ballistic tip. One at 125
yards, the other at 345. Both were dead in their tracks.

However, despite the stellar performance of the Swift, if I had to choose a rifle
for wolf hunting, it would be one of the 6mms. Dave.

22-250, 243, etc, toughest part is actually putting a wolf in the crosshairs. I'd venture to say most wolves in Canada are shot with big game rifles as taken incidentally while hunting game animals...

I prefer my 2506 for wolf. Used the 75gr vmax on a couple but prefer the 117gr interlock spbt much better. For my 223 i load sierra gamekings 55gr. Havent sent one thru a wolf or coyote yet but for visible damage to a stray cat couldnt even find an entrance or exit hole so it zipped right on thru. I think theyll hold up well and expand against a bit more resistence
