Wolves are all very different individually and their risk to humans depend on several factors. Availability of food/whether they’re starving, habituation to humans, etc. Carnegie was killed by wolves but this doesn’t change the fact that predatory wolf attacks on humans are uncommon and unlikely. But I get it, it’s smarter to prepare yourself for “if” they attack just in case.
Strictly for wolf, a .243 and larger is fine. I’ve seen wolves taken out with a .223 but if your life is on the line and a wolf is determined, the more stopping power the better. I’d get a gun that can shoot quickly and accurately, if a pack of wolves is looking to kill you you won’t have much time to mess around.
But honestly, make yourself known and they’ll likely flee immediately. Respect them, keep an eye on their behaviour, be prepared with a gun in case (if you want), but they will likely leave the area before you even get a chance to see them.
Im not a wolf expert but I've shot several in the past year, one of which I stalked in the woods for some time on my own. last month I followed a pack into the woods just to observe them and got within 80 yards or so. If you see one, take it all in and enjoy it.
