Wolf encounter at dusk

I was hunting some old stomping grounds not far away, just off the Primrose Highway. It used to be just a 'goat trail,' but a co-worker informed me beforehand that this area was now spiderwebbed with seismic exploration trails, and he was right. (going partridge hunting)
I initially passed this now wide wilderness road at first, because I did not recognize it at first glance. A quick sojourn down the gravel road and I returned to this spot. Parking my car, I grabbed my 20 gauge O/U and walked quietly in a westerly direction. I took my time and stopped often, listening for forest critter sounds. Not a rabbit or game bird to be seen, but occassionally I would hear movement in the deep bush.
On a good note, the swamp that barred the trail 4 years ago, was fully dried up, and I discovered a wide grassy field about a kilometer walk down the trail.
It was getting dark now, so after a quick survey of the southern boundary, I headed back to my parked vehicle.
Lo and behold.....just on the northern edge of this wide clearing...Mr Wolf was sniffing my trail and we saw each other at the same time.
We were about 20-25 yards apart.
He just put his head down and quietly walked into the northern edge of the forest without even looking back. He looked healthy enough, & definitely too big to be a coyote.
I quietly waited for a bit, and about 3 minutes latter, I heard one twig snap from the area where he came from.
(perhaps his pack scented me and decided to stay out of sight until I left the area)

Gosh, sure is something, seeing a wolf on foot. I have been trailed by wolves before while deer hunting in the Cold Lake area, but on foot this is the first time I've had a visual close encounter, since 1988 in Ontario.

A few years ago I was waiting at dusk for my son to come up a long hill from a swamp edge. It was close to last light and time for him to be leaving his bear stand. I already had my bear so was just sitting there on my truck tail gate waiting. All of a sudden a terrible din of long howls arose down the hill - these weren't yotes.

About 10 minutes later sonny appears carrying his gun in hand - not in the case. He said he just got out of his tree stand and was within yards of that ruckus when it errupted. He could hear snarls and jaw snaps too. Said it made him pick up the pace a bit walking up to join me - guess so. Lotsa fun out in the deep woods eh?

I've always been struck by how most bears, when figuring out what you are, haul ass in the most expedient opposite direction, but wolves just saunter away casually.

Nice, Brutus,

Seems the season of the close encounter with predators up here!

I heard some howling two nights ago off the Primrose. Figure there has to be a fair few up that way.

I'll be in touch! I gotta buy you a cuppa coffee !

Cheers

Trev, yes I read your story of the lynx too.

Pretty darn neat story &, actually it's been a few years since I've heard of them so close to Primrose too.

I enjoyed South Saskatchewan living, but I think I prefer the boreal forest up here, a little better!

PS: Although I could have legally plugged said wolf, the thought of sending # 7.5 lead shot his way, well I would not even try it.
Cheers...........

if i seen another wolf round my place you'd just hear some bangin last one i seen didn't take another step theres a pack around my land and i find dead deer all chewed up quite often so im on a mission

I was hunting grouse 2 years ago when a big doe ran almost right into me she looked panicked did a small circle then took the hard way down a cliff ninstead of backtracking I was fascinated by the encounter, I walked about 15 yards when a what I think was a large black wolf by himself stopped looked at me then took off it was an awesome sight and I couldnt believe how fast he could move, I,ve seen him once more a month later.
