Hey everyone, just curious what calls people have had success with on their wolf hunts? I recently got one to come out to a lone wolf call among some other rabbit distress and deer distress calls. Wondering if anyone has more experience calling wolves and what calls you have had the most successful with!

Went out for an LEH doe this past year and used the fawn distress call, no more than five minutes passed before a pack of 6 wolves came in for dinner! I see sign every time I go out in the bush these days. I don't know what it's like in Manitoba but we are up to our a$$es in wolves in B.C. and our Moose calf survival rate is really poor...Hmmm.
Great fun, nice rug, more Moose.
My two cents (nickels?).

Yeah there's a lot of wolves in my area, lots of guys are trapping them but I haven't had much luck lately calling them in, I might try out the puppy sounds this next time and see how it goes. I brought out a coyote with the coyote pup sounds and big female came charging out and I took her home with me, so I'll try it out with the wolf pups.

Ive had them reply with various wolf howl calls but they didnt come out of the bush.. i found it better to have bait or bones or some type odor out while calling there keene on smell with that out like any dog they will come out and sniff it thats your opportunity to take a shot . if your not fortunate enough to get a big bait pile best to save deer hides meat scrapes bones road kill deer works good also put them in a big container fill it with water and freeze it once frozen scavenger birds like ravens can eat all of the bait if its not frozen in no time.Put it out about 200 yards from were you plan on calling couple days before best to it when temperatures are below freezing thoughout the day so bait doesnt thaw. hope this helps

Thanks that's very helpful! I had thought about baiting but don't have anythinf to bait with at the moment, I'll have to see if anyone has a carcass lying around. That seems to be a common issue not being able to get them to come out of the bush. And I had one come out last month but I didn't have a bait pile out so it just kept moving and missed on a moving shot. Hoping I get another opportunity before seasons over but hey there always next year!

Couple I called in with a rabbit call was surprisingly easy and took about 10 minutes. To quote my taxidermist, wolves can only respond to a call if they're close enough to hear it. :d

Grizz

Baiting can work, just keep in mind there are restrictions on what you can use. Basically no livestock and if you do use roadkilled deer, make sure you get a possession permit from DNR or you can get yourself into trouble.

10 minutes, haha I wish it were that easy! Haven't had anymore luck as of yet but going out for some coyotes soon so maybe a wolf will wander through. Yes I definitely will be following the proper baiting protocol, last thing I want is to get in trouble!

Yes hear in BC were aloud to bait predators just not bears. Often wondered how those predator scent sticks would work also. Just from my experience wolf calling success rate be higher with some type scent out .

I use rabbit and fawn distress sounds. If they're around they come in. The trick is to see them before they locate you. Play the wind wise and set up so that it's hard for them to get behind you
