This post is mostly for fun (not sure if I am going to have the cash to spend on a new gun, but we'll see), and I want to see what you CGN'ers would use to hunt the majestic wolf.

Being a Canadian in Montana, I figure this year I might partake in the 2nd wolf hunting season. Hunting predators has always been somewhat of an interest to me, and now that wolf hunting is open in Montana I figure I might as well give it a shot. Wolf hunting seems extremely hard and challenging, and I have my doubts if I will even see one, but that is part of the fun of the hunt!

I am a broke college kid, so I don't have a whole lot to spend (if any), so right now a new rig is a bit of a pipe dream. I will be hunting with my Montana born and raised friend (he is new to wolf hunting as well), so if it comes down to it he has a bunch of rifles I could borrow for the hunt. I could also use my AK 47, but hunting with this thing I would feel comfortable taking a shot at only 150-100 yards and in, this might really limit me in hunting wolves (again I don't know ).

So I guess this brings me to my question (and remember there will be two of us hunting, me and my Montana buddy)

would you:
A) buy a new rig (<$1000, scope and all), and if so what?
B) Bring one of his scoped bolt guns for the longer shots, and my AK 47 for the closer shots
C) Use two of buddies scoped bolt guns

Id' use ONE scoped bolt action. whether you buy or borrow is up to you. I wouldn't bother with an AK47, mostly because you might encounter longer shots where some more precision is needed.

If you don't have a scoped bolt gun its time you did, although a traditional lever action in .30/30 makes a decent wolf rifle under the right conditions. If a wolf is the subject of the hunt, and not just a chance encounter while hunting other big game, a mid weight high velocity bullet is probably the right choice from something between a .243 and a .270, but you might have to do some sewing on your pelt.

you dont need to spend $1000 on a scoped bolt gun, especially if youre in the US.
order a Marlin XS7 in .243 for $350 (or even .308 if this is going to be your only bolt gun), top it with a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3-9x40mm for $200, and youre set.

leave the AK at home.

Thanks for all the reply guys! I'm probably going to have a look around at the pawn shops when I get back down there for some deals.

So many different firearms I want to get but so little money!

I picked up a Savage Edge in .223 from Cabela's. For $368 taxes in, you could get a pair of your own in .243 and 25-06. They come with a scope already mounted and boresighted. Will easily shoot minute of wolf to way out there. I'd lean more towards the .25 myself. 75 gr. V-Max would be a tough pill for a wolf to swallow.

I said buy a new rig ... for $1000 you can get a nice .223 MKII M77 Stainless/synthetic Ruger and mount a nice leupold 3-9x40 scope and it's lightweight, rustproof and plenty to nail yourself some wolves. ;) Good luck!

At first I was thinking "How the heck did this fool get his hands on an AK-47, and WHY is he telling us he plans on hunting with it?"

And then I realized that he lives in the USA, where such guns are allowed. Shame we can't have them here.

My suggestion: buy a new rig. A .243 would be a good start. I'd probably buy another .257 wby if it were me. If you are concerned about close range shots, bring along a shotgun. I know slugs/buckshot can do in a coyote out past 50 yards.
