Wolf Hunting

Kap outfitters in Kapuskasing is a good wolf outfitter if you wanted to try with a guide the first time a aybe even get yourself a trophy he most likely has the highest success rate in Ontario.

We had a pack of at least five come in to our moose calls up on the side of a mountain. They trotted out at 80 yards or so. I got this black one with the first shot. The grey one was right onher heels, didn't know where the shot came from and ran straight toards us, stopping in the thick willow and spruce I let one go at it once I was sure the black one was down, but the bullet must have deflected.
We picked up mine, took some video footage(hence the crap pics) and made our way down the hill to the creek bottom.
The pack started howling and we answered back. Dan was way ahead of me and I started to think, what if they come after us since we are howling and I reak of the stinky wolf on my shoulders. The howls were getting alot closer but I never thought it would unfold the way it did.
Dan got down to the creek bank, set down the rifles and his pack and was coming back to help me get down a nasty slope. By the time he got there I was already down so he headed back to the creek bottom, where the grey was sitting there waiting for us 40 yards away!
The suprise in it's eyes must have been as much as we had, Dan picked up his 300 and dusted it as it ran up the creek bed.
I still cannot believe they came from downwind, past our position and iout ion the open like that! And then come to our very crappy howl impersonations.

No pics of the grey.:( Mine was about 75lbs, Dans a bit bigger, they don't have their full winter coat but they are beautiful. Check out the size of the melon on this one, it is as big as my bear, if not bigger!

Thanks,
Noel

Here are a couple pictures taken from the same hunt in which A-Zone bagged his big one. I took this pair the day before from a single stand (one in the AM , another in the PM). The last pic was taken mid-day from the same location -- you have to zoom in a bit, but those are 3 cougars crossing the cut-line!

Powderburner, excellent taxidurmy, that wolf is the thing a child's nightmare is made of! But beautiful too. What a giant of a wolf.

Neo, is that rifle in the first picture a small child's rifle or are those really BIG wolves?

Great photos. I really gotta make the effort to get out and hunt some wolves. Do both you guys use calls or just wait and watch?

Well I wouldn't call them BIG wolves after the monster that A-Zone shot the following day, but I'm pretty happy with them nonetheless :p The rifle in question, actually, is a Tikka 595 Deluxe in .243 Win.

This was a wait and watch hunt -- but it was just one of those strange days where there wasn't much waiting and lots of watching.

Hunting one of the greatest predators in North America is a thrill that is hard to describe (until you've been there).

I've shot them off bait, spot and stalk.... but NOTHING comes close to howling them in with your voice.

I took a monster a few winters back that a buddy and I called to for over 1 hour and a few km's...what a rush to finally trick him out into the open!

Called in another big black last year to 6 yards in the heavy timber, but couldn't get a shot (he came out on the wrong side of the tree (he zigged when I thought he'd zag)).

Being out in the frosty predawn air and listening to a pack of wolves light up after you do some locater howls is a great thing.... and the anticipation of having one come in even greater once you see those saucer sized paw prints in the snow.

Do yourself and the deer a favour.... go wolf hunting!
