Which one makes a 'yip yip howwwl'? Coming back to the camp last night I heard one start up down in one of the areas I had just left. It sounded off 3 or 4 times and it sounded as though there was just one of them.

Sounds like a Coyote.

Yip yip howwwwl I believe is a challenge call.

Only time I have heard Wolves, they had a VERY deep howl, scared the bejeesus outta me.

The yipping and howl is a 'locater' type call for a coyote. If there are others in earshot, they'll normally pipe up.

Wolf howl sounds much different... no real yipping that i can remember... but i hear coyotes every night, and wolves only a few times while hunting.

I thought it was a coyote. I often hear the wolves howling at night and there are often a number of them sounding off at the same time and usually they are a fair distance off. This is the first time I've heard this yip yip howl and this close.

With the people who look to nature for weather forecasting, coyotes howling in the daytime is nearly a sure sign of a storm coming.
Wolves will howl anytime of the night or day. Much of their howling is related to chasing, or killing, big game.

A mother wolf will usually get her pups yipping and howling as a form of play/training but it will usually end with a long drawn out call.I've heard it in the morning and early evening. My wife and I had the opportunity to actually see a mother and cubs doing this while scouting our moose area two years ago.It was in September.

Ever had a cougar you can't see scream less than 50 yards away for a 1/2hr then vanish.Happened during spring bear baiting a couple years ago.Another cat down the valley answered then all was silent........Harold
