Wolves competely messed up Elk hunting last year in the Simonette/Latornell area. They would howl all night and morning. Elk were in deep hiding. Called out a few wolves with cow calls.

Fire power for wolves

Yes, when I said a 30-30 was very effective, I certainly meant for closer range. However, I think most of you are like me, in that if you can see the wolf, he is within rifle range! So a flatter shooting rifle that delivers a fair bit of power away out yonder is certainly to be desired. I would say a 243 class would be minimum, and I would prefer the 270 or 30-06.

I've seen a german sheppard take a bunch of 22lr in the vitals and not die until it had the 22 put right behind it's ear. I've seen coyotes cover amazing distance with a 22 centerfire in the vitals. I'd not consider the .22lr suitable for wolves whatsoever.

The 7600 in a 30 cal with 110 grain vmax would likely be an ideal solution, similar to a rapid fire grenade launcher. A levergun would also be a good choice. One benefit to using a rifle rather than a shotgun is the guy at the cabin could have hit the wolves without putting holes in his sled.

I would have taken one of them from the safety of the doorway of the cabin, then after they ate it they might be less hungry for a piece of me, and hopefully less aggressive towards humans in the future.

For a defense purpose I would be interested to see what a flare gun would do. More for scaring them off than killing them. Might work great...... might not do a damn thing. Not going to be the guy to test that out. 12g sounds like a safe bet to me

On the bright side <pun> it would be easy to track the wounded animal. Probably cause a billion acre wild fire in the process. Imagine a bear or wolf, trailing sparkes and going crazy. Not a good idea.
