Wolf vs Coyote (picture)

Keep in mind too that theres also Red Wolves in the Algonquin Park area. DVXDUDE depending on how far away you are from Toronto you might have picked up a hybrid Red Wolf cross.

Everyone should look it up on Wikipedia, there is some very interesting information about the genetic make-up of New England coyotes, out of 100 coyotes on which DNA was tested:
  • 22 were found to contain 50% or more of wolf genes
  • 1 was found to be contain 89% of wolf gene!!!

This means that in New England, southern Quebec and some part of Ontario you often see 50% wolf/ 50% coyote hybrid but it is a coyote and rarely you'll meet a 90% wolf/ 10% coyote hybrid which probably looks like a lot like wolf but is considered a coyote.

Wikipedia is the worst source of anything in cases like this... its just a bunch of people posting entries..... anyone can post a reference on Wikepedia.... it only presents one side of the argument....

I saw a wolf the other day. It was huge. That's how I could tell it was a wolf. It was 200 yards out in a field standing there. Beside a grizzly bear. But it was an albino grizzly bear. And the wolf was huge. Way too big to be a coyote. It was bigger than the bear. I think the wolf just had ### with the bear too. But I'm not sure.

Is it possible for wolves and coyotes to interbreed???

Can anyone answer this ???

Yes, it is true that wolves and coyotes often interbreed. If you are looking for a credible Canadian source on this, other than Wikipedia, Daily Planet on the Discovery channel just aired a piece on the interbreeding of wolves and coyotes in Algonquin Park. Maybe you could find it online, it aired on Dec. 7th. I go to Trent University and a biology student there is doing his PhD on this. It is a research project with the MNR. His findings are not yet published but there is definitely considerable interbreeding. Enough to support a PhD dissertation anyway.

pretty sure this is a coydog. I shot him last year he came to the rabbit distress. He weighted 56lbs skinned. Pure orange. Looks like a coyote, but he was thick, big paws. I think he had a bit of dog in him. Had a Mane on his back with the hair about 2" longer than the rest of his body.

pelt was 72" from nose to tail
I'm 5'11" for size reference.

That follows my thinkin, notice the nose is narrower than the outside of his eyes. Except the right lip which of course is obviously flared out for some reason...maybe he's stiff :D
