Though I'm moderately offended that we have to pay tax on a charitable donation.

I'm pretty sure you're paying tax because you are not actually making a donation when you get the patch. You're buying a product from Wolverine, and then Wolverine uses the proceeds from your purchase to make a donation. If you were just putting $20 in a donation box there wouldn't be any tax because that is a direct donation and not a purchase.
