Just got back from moose hunting. During our 9 day trip we saw 5 wolf kills, 1 grizzly kill and of the cow moose that we saw, only 1 cow had a calf left alive. One ####ing calf moose!
Cow after cow was dry...

Every logging trail and cutblock where we were was tracked up with fresh wolf sign and several large black bears were frequenting the trails around our camp, as well as at least 1 grizzly. These trails were littered with wolf #### and all of it was full of moose hair... the wolves are living very, very well in central Alberta! Eating prime moose meat.

Some friends came to our camp for a visit on the 9th, and they shot a 6' black bear only 75 yards from our tent. I think it was attracted by the smell of sausage and eggs. It woulda been trouble if that bear had not been seen and shot. A 5' black bear was shot only 1/2 mile from our camp by guys from another camp as well, and during this hunt we saw the sign of an absolute monster black bear. A buddy told me prior to our hunt that he had seen a 7'+ black bear in a cutblock near our camp and I believe him.

On the night of the 8th, while we were trying to call moose, we heard a pack of wolves north of us, begin howling. We shoulda quit the moose calling right there and then and tried to call in those ####ers instead!

Bottom line, if you've ever been thinking about maybe doing a little wolf hunting, I cannot think of a better time then right now, or a better place then the Swan Hills area of Alberta. The moose will appreciate it if you lay out a few of those bastards!

Black bears are plentiful and besides the tracks of that one monster, there were several other sets of tracks that were clearly made by 6 1/2' (or bigger) bears. I am already planning on doing a week long black bear hunt there in spring 2006.

I've got a buddy near Fort Ass. I might just have to go up fop a little visit soon... Never been on a wolf hunt, could be fun.

I see you're from Whitecourt. Does the fish & game association up there still do the wild game banquet in the spring? If they do, do you know who I would talk to about buying a ticket?

In NFLD the number of young/new born moose killed by black bears were found to be very significant. :|

Coyotes are taking more, I expect. Even eagles are said to have taken newborns. I have some video clips of a black bear taking a moose calf. Perhaps you've seen it ? It's from New Brunswick.

If you mean that coyotes are also taking a few calves, yea they probably are, but no where near the numbers the black bears, wolves and grizzlies are eating.

.........I killed a small wolf pup last year which i posted. I will continue to kill wolves and coyote on sight. In the edson area i have seen tons and tons of sign. Wolves are like ghosts and very elusive.

Near the gas plant where I work in the Swan Hills area, I saw a pack 3 years ago that had 11 animals!! Imagine how many friggin' deer and moose you need to feed a pack that size!! Those wolves must kill every 2-3 days. And guys regularly see packs there; I assume it's the same pack.

I have never shot a wolf, but that is going to change, and I damn sure intend to kill as many of them as I can!

Ditto for black bears. I am going to talk to my taxidermist guy and ask him about what kind of a deal I can get on multiple bear hides. I am quite sure if I shoot the bears and just give him the hides, he would not refuse them. The guy can always do up the hides and sell 'em for straight profit. If he says no to that, then I gotta revise my thinking...

Well, we don't have wolves (not on the island, at least) or grizzlies, so ...

Demonical, we only saw one wolf this year up in your neck of the woods but saw a #### load of BIG black bears out on the roads and cut lines as well as a #### load of coyotes (2 yotes short after we left  ). In the last 3 years though we've taken a wolf 2 out of the 3 years (beautiful mounts). As you know, they usually don't stick around long enough to pop them but we've been fairly lucky the last little while. BTW, we usually hunt down by the Virginia Hills area - Virginia Hills, Dennison Mines, Ocelot Road, Hope Creek, etc... and occasionally we'll take a jaunt over to the Meekwap for a look-see if we feel like making the trip.
