So I'm going to be buying .223 in the next week or so, I came across the savage axis and started looking into reviews of the line and the overall thoughts. It was clear to me that it was almost right down the middle, some people loved it and others hated it. So I went it to my local gun shop and tried to see one, they didn't have one because they don't carry the Axis line because the bolt is cast. What do you all think, does the bolt being cast make it a deal breaker?

Wow, 3 questions in 4 posts.

I had an Axis and it was a great little shooter for the price. It would shoot under an inch at 100m and i could hit tennis balls at 200 with ease with cheapo Win and UMC ammo. Very nice shooter.

Crappy stock, skinny barrel and girly sized pistol grip made it lame to shoot.

Do you plan on target/percision shooting with it? Do you have future plans on doing some custom work to it?

Everything would have to be custom on it. Way better to buy a model 10 action and bolt on everything for cheap. The axis is about the same price as a Stevens 200.

I have a axis in .308, good little cheep rifles for hunting or making noise .. But far from a target rifle.

Will this .223 be your first rifle? Are you sold on the cal or the axis for its price?

If your sold on the cal but strapped for cash you should try to save a bit more and get a Remington 700 sps. You can get em for $500-$600

If your sold in the axis.. Strange.. But use a cal u can at least hunt with or ur wasting $ imo.

Not everyone hunts.

There are many, many rifles on the market that will shoot better than a Remington 700, but cost much less.

Op wants some opinions. I have owned everything from a Stevens to a timberwolf.

Like I said I have an axis right now and I like it. Good little rifle but just not accurate enough IMO to justify paying for it in a .223. The gun does not even have a recoil lug. It's like a recoil key.
.223 is a fun accurate round but still to expensive to plink with how u would a .22 so you should at least get something accurate.

If u can afford to plink with a .223 than you can afford something better than a axis as well.

Thank you all for info
I do have other guns, .308, .22, 7.62x39. The reason for the .223 bolt action is because I can shoot .270 and under where I go varmiting and there are yotes there as well and I'm not even going to think of using my .22 for that, also I'm getting an AR chambered in .223 and I like the idea of being able to have a surplus of ammo that will run through two of my guns. I think the price of the Axis caught my eye and I had a few reservations so who better to ask then the CGN brotherhood - I ultimately decided to go with the savage model 11/111 in .223. I will be back in the next few to let everyone know how she handles.

Cheers

Buying a model 11/111 you have a good base to build on in the future if you decide to go that route. The Axis is a cheap rifle that may or may not fill a need.

So I ended up buying a Stevens 200 a redfield scope quick change rings and a Harris bipod. I don't know what to say other than its a good little .223 and it was cheap. I'm sure I could have spent more and got more but the 200 is a no frills platform that gets the job done and I have confidence in the rifel, if you haven't tried one I suggest you do you may just be surprised.

Love the Stevens .223, on YouTube I saw a trigger job that got the pull from 10 pounds to about 2.5 pounds, I'm thinking of doing that to see how it feels. I also found a timiny trigger for the Stevens 200 for $103.99 - if my fist trigger job is a bust I will spend $ and put in a tim

i have a edge in 223 that will do under .35 at 100 all totaly stock with handloads its not as good as my rem 700 2250 that i have about 4000 bucks tied up in it shoots about .25 considering you cant pay the sales tax on the remmy build on what the savage cost its pretty good.Has any body had any luck with higher recoiling rounds the one thing i wonder about is the cheesy lug now that you can get it in left im thinking of getting a few more
