Dug a little deeper into the junk box------Oops, I meant parts storage----and came up with this, a military barrel and receiver.
Does anyone recognize the symbol behind the s/n?
Barrel is about 18.5 inches and is approximately 8mm.
I'm sure I've seen that back sight before, but can't place it.

THe chinese rebarrelled some type 99 carbines in the 50s to 7.62X39mm. If it is a type 99 it would originally have been in 7.7 Japanese (basically a rimless .303 british)

Definately an Arisaka type 38 carbine. It should be 6.5x50mm. Though if it was captured in China it could have been converted to something else.
It is a larger calibre than that. I happened to have a 303 British bullet lying there and it drops right through the bore.

Thanks guys, we are getting closer.
An Arisaka bolt goes full in the receiver, but the handle won't turn down.

It is an Arisaka t38 carbine barreled action. As for many of them being converted in China, they weren't converted but purpose built in the 7.92x57 chambering in the Mukden Arsenals .

The Americans converted thousands of 7.7mm type 99 rifles to 30-06 by rechambering/lengthening the magwell and cutting the receiver ring to accept the longer cartridge. They were notably inaccurate but rifles were in short supply in the early stages of the Korean war.
