Woo-Hoo! Custom .35 Whelen FINISHED! :)

Very nice.......your Dad would have ample justification to be pleased. Cost wise, believe came close to a Dakota build?

Feature for feature, the Dakota would have been more expensive by about $1000 or so. But I enjoyed the process myself, whereas a Dokota is like ordering from a catalogue - and also not easy to procure in Canada.

I have seen it and it will be a pretty Mauser when it's done. The stock has some nice figure now that it's oiled and the varnish is gone - yuck.

I still think you're a brave man by thinning the lower bolt lug recess that much, and I think the gunsmith who did the work and recontoured the feed ramp could have done a better job of polishing it. I've only ever seen one Mauser grenaded and it was a browning safari lengthened to .300 H&H. It likely will never fail, but I'm a big scardy cat!!! lol... You might ask Jason to repolish the ramp, it's rougher than I would accept personally, but fixable for sure. Jason's metal work is without peer.

I trust you will post pics here for everyone who HASN'T seen it?

That is one of the things on the list to do. I ran a dummy over it and it felt smooth and fed OK, but it scratched the case.

How far along is he? :D

I think the stock is ready to be checkered - possibly already out at the checkerer. The metal is blued and your mount and rings are on the barrelled receiver.

By the way - why a one piece Leupod base? That's not very "mauser-like". Sure it works, but two piece bases would (imho) look better on that style receiver with defined front and rear bridges.

I agree that a two pc base is a better choice. I actually don't like Leupold bases other than the dual dovetails. I don't trust those two big screws on the back. Most of my 700s have Weaver style mounts or Talleys.

I decided to send those with the rifle and get them matched to the metal and someday down the road replace them with something more suited. I think I will look for a steel Weaver style 2pc base setup and a set of Burris rings. The scope will be a 1.5x5 B&L Balvar.

.

I like your scope choice, btu I think I would be tempted to go Tally, Warne, EAW, or even Laupold 2 piece bases. I wouldn;t put Weaver personally - to valnilla, but I'm strange that way!

Yes, the Weaver system is plain jane, esp the aluminum jobs, but it does work very well and is quite light for a rifle that needs to be. The all steel Weavers are becoming more readily available, and are a bit nicer. I'll just use the 1pc till I get a better plan. :)

Sounds like Jason is making good time on this project. I hate it when guys are unreasonably slow on stuff.

Well, the problem is that the checkering is out of Jason's hands. He contracts that part out. Also, he is swamped right now cleaning Cooeys and Reminton 742 "lanark specials" for deer season, so any new custom work will progress slowly for the next coupla months. Forany gunsmith, this is the money making season!

If you do go Weaver, go steel or go home! :) And buy good quality steel rings too!

I think I'm twice your age, and can't recall ever getting spanked - can remember pleading on behalf of my younger brother after he wax crayoned a wall - but certainly cannot complain about the upbringing that I received. And I have nothing but pride in my kids - who I think are older than you.
Nothing wrong with Weaver bases or the mounting system, but the way standard Weaver rings roll the scope when tightened is very frustrating. I avoid them like the plague for that reason.

I agree 1000% about the scope rolling - not good!

As for the spanking thing, well, I was being humorous ;) I can count on one hand the spankings I can remember. None of them were abusive, and all of them well deserved! (I'm in my 30's for the record).

But I will say, I am a firm believer in "spare the rod, spoil the child" though the gov't does not allow this behaviour, so my daughter gets "time outs" instead ;) Another topic best discussed offline...

I like the old school look and the European look of the iron sights. :) It is a very nicely done custom Mauser and not your run of the mill Remington.:D
Your Dad's a lucky guy and I wish him luck on his hunts with it...
PS, there is only one custom rifle like this, but there are 120,000,000 Remington's floating around.

How does the gun shoot, I am interested in the Montana rifle barrels from PD my self and am wondering what the quality and finish are like. What did the smith have to says about the barrel choise ?
