I picked up my No5, it all matches and has a super shiny bore. I grabbed some Federal 180's from Crappy Tire, I hope to get to shoot it tomorrow.
I hope it shoots as good as it looks, one of my shooting buds had and extra set of reloading dies and is convincing me to start reloading instead of buying store bought ammo. He gave me 35 once fired brass and told me to practice decapping the brass. I think for now I will try out this new to me rifle before reloading for it. I took the front metal hand guard band off and looked for the cut outs on the barrel like I saw on the internet, it has the cut outs. The side has No5Mk1(F) and also has 4/47. I thought they were made during the war years up to 1945?? I see I have more researchng to do, any further info would help. Thanks

Yours is a later production rifle. The No.5 was produced from 1944 to 1947, by Royal Ordinance Factory Fazakerley (what yours is) and BSA Shirly (marked M47C).

Don't worry, for Britain the war years continued long after 1945. Your 1947-built No.5 had plenty of chances to be part of history.

No5Mk1

Let us know how it shoots. I've got one marked 3/45 No5Mk1 ROF? (the ? is unreadable) so I'm not sure if it's a Faz or Maltby. May be some one give me an idea. Unfortunately, it had been sporterized before I got it (sporter stock and part of the flash hider removed) but it is still one of my favourites.

Cheers, Will

If it's a real No5 Mk1 it had to come from Fazakerly if it's marked ROF. They were only made there and Shirley.

Thanks

Woodbeef,

Thanks for that, I've only recently become more interested in the why's and wherefor's of the Lee Enfields. The history starts (and will go on forever, hopefully) at the beginning of all time great military rifles.

Cheers, Will
