Another thing I have used in self teaching myself checking, is to start on flat piece of walnut, it get you use to layout, and keeping your lines straight, and much less fustrasting than starting on a rounded surface you are afraid to F*&K UP! I used these early examples later as small token box lids, great little gift to a close friend or family member! good luck and remember walk away when you get tired or fustrated, cheers Dale Z!

My suggestions - Very good light, magnifying glasses, and one hour at a time max.
And a soft brush for clearing the dust away as you cut.

One of the hardest things to master (at least for me) was keeping the bit at right angles to the wood while going over / on a rounded pistol grip and forend, practised on similiar shaped (scrap) wood till I got the hang of it. The other was over-runs - I now pull the bit towards the border, it may be just me buts it's a lot easier to stop just right. FWIW --- John303.
