Of the 16 nest boxes I checked thursday, 9 had either hens sitting or multiple eggs! Great results and a week or so earlier than last year.
Our other boxes with cameras show lots of activity, we should be close to capacity in this area in a week or so. We have 80+ boxes in another marsh and should get out there May 16 for a check that will give us a firm idea of nesting percentage out there. Last year we were at 41% occupied by ducks (Woodies and a couple Hooded Mergansers).
Strange to find a picture of a mallard hen standing on a box this time! Also saw a Northern Flicker there, a common visitor of the boxes but we've never seen one nest in our boxes.
