We wrapped up our 2018 Woody box project saturday. We have 96 boxes out with 39 occupied by Wood ducks, thats about 40%!!! Great year, lots of great photos, met new volunteers and it turned out to be our best year yet in both the field and organizing! We appreciate the support we received this year from Reliable Gun in Vancouver, Kent Cartridge Canada, Sure Shot game calls, Bote-Tote, and DUinBC.
Our pictures from our last day out turned out to some of the best ever!
Thanks to those of you who followed along and commented on the pictures!
Cheers, Dano

I've never seen the Yellow throated Warbler before but it looks great too!

I don't know about best shots, there have been so many great shots it's impossible to judge. Thank you for the threads, pics and service to the waterfowl.

Congrats on the success of the project.
Hope it continues long into the future. How has the success percentage changed over past years.
Approx 40% this year you mention Dano, but what about the previous years?
Great pics too.

great photos. but im a little confused.

how do the adult ducks get into and out of the box?
is it the small hole at the front? i always thought of ducks as being pretty clumsy. they can land and enter a small opening like that?

The hen flys up to it and grabs it with her foot. If you look over the previous posts, you’ll see a few pictures of them hanging outside before they go in.
On pictures of birds on top of the box you’ll sometimes see the area under the hole is wet. That’s from a hen that was swimming and then flew up into the hole.

ahh. thats impressive.

Through out central Ontario, perhaps beyond, not sure, nest boxes like that used to be maintained by folks under funding by the MNR. The program of course has been cut. The boxes were maintained every winter by snowmobile, cleaned out, straightened, and even predator guards installed. Sad to see it go, but happy to see your volunteers doing such great work.
