I know somebody who is looking for wooden grips for his S & W N frame, and I was wondering if anybody on here can recommend a good source, preferably here in Canada. PS: GO TEAM CANADA!

I've ordered a few sets of Ahrends grips from D&J Gun Repair in Virginia. Although they're not in Canada they'll ship here no problem -- usually it takes about a week from order to delivery. I really like Ahrends grips -- I've got a set of "Retro Targets" on my 28-2.

The Herrett grips are worth it...

The Herrett grips are custom made based on a tracing of your hand.

I have them on my favorite hand gun, a smith model 17 - 2, a keeper for life.

The grips (or is it stocks?) cost a bit.

But I know guys that spend that much on a game of golf, beers then a taxi home.

Why not on real wood custom made for you?
That you will own for a long time?

The Herretts are called stocks, a tradition from when he started the business, a long time ago. They are nearing $200 now, but if you consider what collectors are paying for old S&W grips (early 50's and earlier), it doesn't look so bad. They are certainly are more recoil friendly, much nicer on the hand. - dan

Herrett's prices are actually fairly reasonable for what you get; they aren't much different from Hogue wood grips in terms of price.

As for recoil, I'll have to admit that I haven't tried rubber grips, so I can't really compare. Recoil is a non-issue with the .38 and the .44 isn't too bad with full power loads. A set of grips that fit your hand greatly improves controllability and shooting comfort. Also, a checkered surface is much harder on your hands than a smooth one.

I think the old factory S&W target grips are too bulky for most people's hands. Either the Ahrends or Herrett Roper grips are slimmer and allow you to have a better grasp on the gun.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Those are some fine examples of what's available. I'm a big fan of wood grips myself, and have them on my CZ. I think they add a touch of class to the classic pistols.
