Wood vs Synthetic

IMO you need a synthetic before you start collecting wood ones.

wood stocks are nice and i prefer them, but you really dont want to slug them through the crappiest weather or worst conditions. first have at least one cheap plastic stocked 'beater' gun that you can drag through mud and rain and snow without worry.

It's just wood! If it gets ugly, just refinish it.

We did fine with wood before tupperware came along. No need to have tupperware for first gun or any gun. No reason why your beater has to be tupperware. Wood makes good beaters eh! Pick something you like or the kid likes. I seems that CGN like to sit on a see saw before every purchase:DI like this icon :weird:

its not just the damage. synthetic is nonporous, wont hold moisture & wont warp and shift your POI with changes in humidity. someone was recently complaining about an over 4" shift in POI in wet weather with their walnut stock

if i didnt own a designated 'beater' id at least buy a cheap stock for the gun on the EE for $60-100 or so to swap in when you know youre going to be exposing it to crappy conditions.

or at least compromise with laminate which wont warp as much :)

Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun and it is also too short to hunt with a beater! WTF did we ever do before synthetic? Some make it sound like the hunt would not go on in anything other than blue bird weather. There are lots of reasons for synthetic, but to have a beater stock handy in case the weather is bad? Gawd I wish I had an icon for ####ting myself laughing:dancingbanana:

My guess is he'll pick the synthetic. Also wood is better for the higher calibres

Your right, he picked synthetic. Go figure :) A pretty little .243 synthetic blued. I left the door open for a wood and a stainless but this is what he chose. It's his rifle. I also showed him the youth Vangaurd, Ruger, Remington SPS and more.

I originally ordered it form WSS with a 3 - 4 week wait. P&D dropped there Tikka prices to match WSS so I cancelled the WSS order and went with P&D who had it in stock. It will hopefully arrive early next week, get out to the range and then go tag some yotes, weather permitting of course.

It almost feels like Christmas again :D

I had a Browning Stainless stalker in 338WM with a tupperware stock. It shot beautifully, but the design beat the crap out of my shoulder. Further, after I'd had it a few years, the stock started to feather. Looked crappy.
Still, I had the thing so I could lay it in the bottom of the canoe while moose hunting, and it worked very well for that.
However, it would not return the warmth of your hand like wood does, and was very cold to use in late season hunting. Like hanging on to the barrel.

If I were doing it again, it would be wood.
