Woodleigh weldcores

The bottom one is a 30-06 taken from a feral hog, distance: 80 yards 168TTSX, started at 2900 fps. Needed a second shot to anchor. It exited, so no recovered bullet to see.

Top one is a 338, 250 grain TSX Bull elk at 275 yards. Started at 2725 fps. Also needed a second shot to anchor. Second shot was a 200 Nosler partition from a 308 Norma, so not a viable comparison.

Seeing these results has made me just a bit edgy on the monometals. I would like to be sure they will open every time. I also realize that no bullet is foolproof, but the venerable NP gets close,
in my experience. FWIW, A-Frames are like a somewhat improved Partition, lol. D.
 
I'm at a loss to explain how those X bullets could not have expanded. Unexplained phenomena - a couple of examples for the X-Files for sure. :p

If these were representative performance examples, these wouldn't be bullets to be used at all on big critters that can claw and bite back.

Having a hollow point, expansion should be assured at the impact speeds stated. I'm aware that if these bullets impact at very high speeds the petals will disintegrate. Not really an issue with 40+ calibers because these start out pre-expanded so to speak. I've had nothing but excellent performance on heavy game with 35, 416 and 458 caliber X bullets at any range.

Here's a 300gr X bullet from my 416 Remington Magnum that went lengthwise through an Elk and was recovered in the hind. Impact speed was about 2900 fps.

i ve witnessed in different occasions the non expanding of Barnes bullet with barren ground caribou. cant tell which version it was but after the recovery of the caribous we found pencilling effect hopefully partition bullet finished well the job.
 
I'm pretty surprised that they didn't open up and didn't pass through. I've heard of a few people shooting small deer through the neck and not having success with the Barnes opening up. I thought it was more of a light game problem and not enough meat
 
I've had terrible results with Barnes tsx bullets in 30 cal and smaller. They either didn't expand or blew off all the petals

I haven't hit any game with my woodlieghs yet but all recovered bullets from other medium shows great promise
 
It's like a grenade effect with the disintegrating petals which creates a rather large volume of blood-shot tissue. I see this with X bullets from my 416's at high impact speeds on Elk and Moose. Should be the same with 30 caliber X bullets, but on a smaller scale compared to the 416. The plastic tip should promote expansion (or petal disintegration depending on impact speed).
