Sorry if this has been discussed to death in the past....couldn't find anything.

What base layer/underwear is best?

So far I've been told to look for Hely Hansen Medium Weight underwear.
Le Barons sales person recommended the " Smartwool" product over the Hely Hanson.

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks.

If you really want to stay warm in low activity sub-zero, first layer should
be pure silk, second layer "expedition weight" poly-pro or one of the other
high-tech brand names. Both Orvis & L.L. Bean make great under-layer products
- I've found to be better than HH.

Thermax beats the snot out of polypro, including HH (and I have been using this stuff for over a quarter century). Polypro stinks like hell if you sweat even a little bit, it eventually shrinks, it always "pills" and in general it is an inferior product. BUT it is fairly inexpensive so if you are on a budget (as I was for a couple decades) polypro rules! It does everything it claims to do - but it has the downsides that I mentioned.

PS to Gatehouse) OK who is that person in your avatar????

Enough is enough, either start e-mailing the pic to everyone or change your avatar.

You're just a tight legged $^&*% tease.

Not having any luck finding this stuff.....

Been to the stores looking for HH mid weight. Everyone is only carrying the thin baselayer or something called prowool by HH.

Did HH change the stuff and now call it prowool?

I can't find Thermax that Doug mentioned either.

...help .....

anyone have any info ...again....

wool underwear, the wool I'm thinking of would just cause some nasty chafeing, not pleasent.

Wool pants are great

I wear a combination of cotton and polypropelene for the first layer, depending on the weather, then layer with good old flannel shirts and a gortex jacket sometimes with a wooly liner if its cold enough.

and Boxers can't have the boys movement restricted

Have a look at Mountain Equipment Co-op www.mec.ca

They have various weights of underwear, and the prices aren't bad.

Don't make eye contact with the hippie flower children though...

Have to agree with Doug on this one. Ive been using Thermax for a few years and the stuff is fantastic.

I bought mine a few years ago. The only Thermax stuff I could find was made by Remington, and well, it's lasted about 8 years now. A good material will wick moisture away from your skin.

Granted, I only use it for hunting, but not much will last me 8 years.

Beretta boy said "If you really want to stay warm in low activity sub-zero, first layer should be pure silk"..... I think the important qualifier here is "low activity" ... I came close to hypothermia wearing silk as a first layer in a moderate activity (tracking deer in about a foot of snow) ... the perspiration soaked the silk (which apparently does not "breathe") and did not wick away from my body.... I finally had to strip down to the skin to remove the silk undershirt and get something dry next to me... very unpleasant in a sub zero snow fall. For my 2 cents leave the silk for the Eddie Bauer apres ski set....stick to polypro, worsterlon or wool... and btw ... normally I need a wind breaker of some sort in conjunction with polypro AP

base layer either boxers and t-shirt or one piece fine wool underwear.

then course wool underwear.

then wool pants and a HH jacket. don't forget a good hat, when it is cold i wear a HH cowl.

wool socks.

one thing to remember, polyester is flammable.

and i second not making eye contact with the granolas at mec, last time i was in there (calgary), there was a guy wearing a dress, or a wrap, or whatever they want to call it.

Check out Blue Johns in Canada..

I'm looking at them, apparently they don't retain the same stink that poly pro does, and that is nice on an extended trip...

lildave, I had sent you a link to Cabela's catalogue a month ago. They have several types of Thermax undergarments listed. I will look it up again and post it here.
