World War II Panzer Ace Otto Carius - Dead At 92

Ordered-thx purple.

Gun shows are THE only place I can find books like that anywhere, anybody else noticed that too?

For some reason a lot of used books stores don't have this kind of literature and BMV books are the only one notable exception I can think of.

It's a shame really. If you don't know your history you are doomed to repeat it...

From "Tigers in the Mud" he seemed a likeable guy, it would have been great to work with him. So he is missed. Having dinner with Himmler must have been quite the experience.
I'm glad I wasn't on the Eastern Front, they never cleaned their underwear to keep the lice out. His boss Graf, was quite the character too "Take note of this, Carius," he said in a friendly manner. "If I say that this ditch doesn't exist as an antitank ditch to me, then it doesn't exist. Do we understand each other?"

Funny thing about the Eastern Front, I would have wanted the Germans to have been more successful to keep the Soviets out of Germany, Otto would have agreed.

if the Germans were anymore successful we would all be speaking German right now Russia has the raw resources that Germany didn't and if they got to those it would have been over

Yeah, I would have liked to had dinner with Himmler. I would bury a dinner fork in his eye socket.

Is just a guess, nobody can know how will be evolving in time a victorious Germany. We as Romanians allways will prefer Germany over Russia.

Can't stab what isn't there...:)

Herr Carius was successful in most things in life. His pharmacy did very well for him. I'm sorry he's gone, but I have to think that by the time I'm 92, I'll be damned good and ready. I hope he wanted to go.

I ordered paperback from Amazon. It's back ordered but it's ok-I can wait.

Speaking of memoirs:can anyone suggest printed memoirs of British,Russian or Finnish tankers?

I read quite a few memoirs of airmen of various nationalities and there is always something interesting in them that's not mentioned in history books.

For a Canadian soldier's view on life in a tank read " Steel my Soldier's Hearts" by Neil J. Stewart. The author served as a crewman in Shermans in the Fort Garry Horse and Canadian Grenadier Guards from D Day to VE Day and was shot out of 3 tanks. The first time 3 of 5 crew members survived, the next time it was 2 and the last time it was him alone. He discusses getting KOd by German paratrooper with a Panzerfaust @ 40 ft range the last time. It was in the closing days of the war. After KOing the tank the German threw down his weapon and put his hands up to surrender with a smirk on his face. The smirk was wiped off with a burst from a STEN and the guy did not get to be a POW.

Germany would have gotten to the oil and other raw materials they needed to continue fighting for decades. as a Canadian with a mixed blood line including German I can say I would never liked to have seen Nazi Germany win

He was a brave man and fought for his country. As far as I'm concerned he is entitled to respect for that. No matter how hideous the cause they fought for the German soldier in WW2 fought well and was a tough adversary.

Agreed 100%. My late Uncle Micky joined the Wehrmacht in 1938 as a signaller, straight out of the orphanage in Dresden where he had been since he was about a month old. He 'retired' from active duty in a ditch just outside Moenchen-Gladbach in Nord-Rhein Westphalen in early Spring 1945, after his column was hit by a bunch of American ground attack role aircraft. Although he was 'just' a signaller, ending up as a warrant officer, he had somehow managed to earn a second and first class Iron Cross, three close-combat awards, and fifteen wound stripes. He was the most gentle person I met, slightly built, although just over six feet tall on one side, as he used to joke, having left an eye, arm and leg in the ditch at the side of the road. He was strongly opposed to violence, especially where women were concerned, and spent his life after the war working for charities supporting victims of domestic abuse. He taught me German, and I miss him every day.

and you did not experience that of the NAZI's the Russians were our allies at the time and without them the cancer that was the Third Reich would have spread plain and simple they should also be respected for that. and no I was born in Canada were my great grandfather of German/Dutch decent fought to keep this country free of the Nazi scum. nothing against the common German soldier of the time they made their sacrifice doing what their country told them to do but im glad things turned out they way they did

The reason the Nazis moved westward in the 1st place is because the Russians were Hitler's allies and thus allowing the Germans to have a secure Eastern border. The Third Reich was allowed to spread in 1939 because of Russians. Why are there so may ignorant people today that dont understand this simple point of fact?!

It's like thanking the arsonist for putting out the fire that he originally started.

Practically speaking the Russians were never our allies, not during WW2, not during 80's under Glasnost and sure as shiitt, as they have proven once again, not today.

Well said. RIP Otto.

Pretty much sums it up.

Germany would likely have won the war if they had enrolled the 1.5 million Ukrainians who volunteered to fight the Russians instead of deciding that they were sub human Slavs only good for slave labour.

When millions of you (Holodomor) are starved via man made famine to prove political theory, any invader attacking your oppressor is an allie to be welcomed.

There were 1 division of SS infantry and 4 battalions of order police, in all 80K in volunteers. Most Ukrainians preferred to sit out the occupation and wait for the Soviets to come back.

When the Germans initially came in in '41 it was a different story.

German policy quickly squandered the opportunity....thank God.
