A fellow called me the other day to ask me about his Lakefield .22lr

He said that the barrel looked partially smooth on one side of the inside of the barrel like the lands were wore down to the bottom of the rifling.

Is this possible?

Lead on steel doesn't produce enough friction to wear down steel.

He said its shot fine up until the past little while now he finds it hard to get a gouping.

Any advice?

Shooting out a .22 barrel is VERY difficult. My guess is it's just really dirty. Most people I know who own an 'old .22' rarely if EVER clean them. And, they use the cheapest crappiest ammo ever made. That makes for a dirty barrel over years of use.

if it shot fine up to now, i would give the barrel a good cleaning and check to make sure the groves are all showing. some cheap 22 ammo can be dirty to the barrel and do this problem.
