So I went on the hunt for a swager.... my intial results were less than promising. I found a handful of single stage mounted sets (useless to me because I've got a progressive), and than a 100-200 hand crack one that was put out by Dillion. I was begining to think that I'd have to put my case swagging on hold until I could either find a single stage press or cough up the funds for a seperate hand crank set.

Until I found this swagging set... Mounts to any press. The die is what holds the shell. The swagging bit is what slides into where the shell would normally go. Turn the crank and viola, a swagged case.

Made by a small company called CH Tool and Die.

I have yet to test it out yet, but it looks promising.

I don't think that CH4D are that small (thou its a bit hard to tell) and they have been around since 1947.

Turn out some good stuff. A lot of it things that you won't find anywhere else.

Let us know how it works for you. Looks like it swages primer pockets and includes parts to use it as a press mounted priming set up too.

I've got an old one of those. I hate it and won't use it anymore.

In use, the rod is raised into the primer pocket, pushing the whole case up. What holds the case down is the rim engaging the shell holder in the top of the die. If your brass has strong crimps, the rims will tear off before the pockets assume the proper shape.

After wrecking a few cases, I tried sliding the case over a steel bar to push against the head, so it was directly supported. Then I took the forming rod, placed it in the pocket and hit it with a hammer. Guess what? The crimp is still there! The damn rod end isn't even the right shape!

I got my Dillon "Super-Swage 600" last week... Cost $100USD, but well worth it.

Easiest way to deal with crimped primer pockets :)

well I'm glad to hear that somebody likes there tools ....I bought one to swage my 50 bmg pockets ...and all it did for me was rip the rim off the cases .....and at $3.00 for a 50 bmg brass....and destroyed a few ............ well I'm not to happy with it ...piece of shnnittt !!!!!

;)sorry to throw and off topic in but what brass will have crimped pockets? and how do you tell if its a crimped pocket?....

Mostly military brass, also I've had some non-toxic 45 acp that had crimped pockets. If the primer is a biotch to decap, and then a new primer won't fit in, that's the easy way to tell.

Ok nevermind, above posters were correct. I pissed around for 3 hours trying to get the crimps out with those dies... I would bend the cases before I could get the crimps out. I guess I'll just have to buy a drill press. I need one anyways. :(

What are you swaging? Caliber?

I've deprimed and full length sized an awful pile of IVI 5.56 brass. I just ran a carbide ball die grinder burr in the chuck of my lathe, and used that to deburr the rim of the primer pocket. It went pretty quick.

Never had a problem getting the primers seated. Didn't have to move much material to get rid of the burr, either.

Cheers
