Worst Deer Calibers

I think it's a humour article, or that Petersens never actually printed it, and the thread is a joke.;)

Just to have fun, I will play with why these suck as deer cartridges. They are CARTRIDGES, and not CALIBERS, but gun magazines don't seem to know the difference.;)

- 7mm Rem Mag

Too much horsepower- Use a .270

- Any .22 centrefire

Too small

- .44 Mag ( in rifle )

If it's a rifle, then may as well shoot a 30-30

- .375 Win/ .444 Marlin

Similar rifles to 30-30's and dont' need any more than that

- .280 Rem
You can buy /270 ammo at gas stations when you forget yoru ammmo

- .300 RUM

If you need the long range capabilities of a 300 magnum, you may as well get a 300WSM

- .243 Win

hck, even I hate the .243 excepta s a yote gun

- .300 Savage

Use a 308

- .30-06 Ackley Improved

Use a 300WM

- .32 Win special

No need for this when we have the 30-30

- .8mm Mauser

A 7x57 is bettter

- .303 Brit

Usually chambered in sloppy action SMLE's, with questionable accuracy. The only appropriate rifle for the .303 is the Ruger #1:evil:

Just figured I would post it for some good old fashion debating/pot stirring.
That is the kind of list you would get if you asked thousands of hunters what is the 1 worst caliber for deer. Every hunter has at least 1 caliber they don't like for use on deer, I'd have gone with the .22 cf.

Petersens Hunting just ran an article with the 12 worst calibers for deer hunting. I assume they mean the 12 worst commonly used calibers.
At any rate, here they are in no particular order.

- 7mm Rem Mag
- Any .22 centrefire
- .44 Mag ( in rifle )
- .375 Win/ .444 Marlin
- .280 Rem
- .300 RUM
- .243 Win
- .300 Savage
- .30-06 Ackley Improved
- .32 Win special
- .8mm Mauser
- .303 Brit

The 7mm Remington? Because the 7X61 Sharpe and Hart is wayyy gooder?

The .44 Mag but not the 44-40 or 38-40?

The 280 Remington but not the 270 or 30-06?

The 300 RUM but none of the bajillion other 300 Mags that gunwriters have been salivating over these last few years?

The 243 but not the near obselete 240 Weatherby or 6mm Remington?

The 300 Savage but not the .308?
Guess he's never shot 99F Savages in .300 Savage and .308 Win. at the same sitting.

The 30-06 Ackley? About as common as 7X61 Sharpe and Hart.

The 32 Special hasnt had legs since prohibition so why not pick on it?
Should have taken a kick at the 32-40 and 38-55 as well but most of his readers wouldnt know what he was talking about.

The 8X57 lost 2 world wars so its just gotta be ineffective on deer.

But.....Drumroll........any ragwriter who slams the .303 in print should be slapped in the nuts with his laptop and sent to write for Ladies Home Journal.
(if they'd take him.)

Damn near what they wrote.

Damn near what they wrote.
Not surprising. I've read lots of hack gun writers over the years.;)

The only Petersens gun magazine worth anything these days is Rifle Shooter, and even then it's hit and miss.

I've got some old copies of G&A, back when Seyfried and a few other quality writers wrote for them. Damn good magazine back then. it's liek People Magazine nowdays...

Whatever banned substance that author is on, I want some. That is the most mind-blowing nonsense I've seen printed in a long time.

Well, I guess I'm good with either the 6.5x55 or .338 Win Mag. That was a close call, I would have hated to have to sell one of them just because of an idiot's list like that.:jerkit:

I guess someone over at Peterson's forgot to tell my muley this year.
Dropped like a sack of hammers with a .280 at a tad over 400 yards.
Thanks for the rifle Rembo!!!!!

What a stupid list.

The 280 good, but 7Mag is bad?
30/06 good, but 30/06AI is bad?

Peterson is hunter education for the sheeple.

.300 Savage no good for deer? I've been using that caliber for moose hunting for 2 weeks. I bet if it's no good for deer than it'll just bounce off any moose i come across... :runaway:

Dorian

 Guess those little west coast blacktails will be safe from my .223 now as it will be too shameful to carry a bad 'calibre'.

Instead of these these rags filling pages with completely useless articles & azz kissing manufactures who loan them product to 'test'; fill those otherwise empty pages with wild game receipes or 'The good whisky for deer camp'....
