worst moose hunt EVER!

I just got back from 5 days in WMU 32. The weather was pretty crappy, it was overrun by hunters from Southern Ontario with adult tags (when hardly any locals got one), etc. All in all, we had a great time. We went looking for chickens, had a scout around for calf tracks, but had fun nevertheless.

:)

Yup.

Get used to it. It rains here ALMOST every day in the fall.

Pack your rain gear next time or stay down south and hunt geese ;)

I am sorry your hunt sucked and you didn't get anything though :(

Did a week in 21A near Terrace Bay. Warm and rain and wind.......... Saw lots of hunters, but only a few sets of tracks. We didn't see a moose until the trip home when we saw a cow just outside of Wawa.

I think this was the earliest season opening possible and it contributed a bit to the weather.

Partridge were not very plentiful either. The only game that we saw lots of were rabbits.

Brad.

JITC-We hunt 12B near Thunderbay.Got in on Wed 10,Oct at about 4 PM only to find that the area we hunt had been recently clear cut and the chippers were working right where we usually camp. The loggers told us it had rained for the past 30 days.We moved about 5 K down the road & set up camp in the rain. The next morning our 86 yr old member went out at about 8 am & shot a bull beside an old logging road. The weather cleared up after that & stayed nice until yeaterday morning when we broke camp.We tore down in the rain & drove all the way back home in the rain & fog.Only saw 5 partridge all week. Sounds like a ####ty week.

I guess I guess this is where being a local is an advantage. I will be "grouse hunting" teh nice days with the 7mm-08 for the next month hoping to cut a calf track.

In the spring at our camp near Timmins we would count 15 to 25 moose in one week. This year is the first since 1989 we only saw 3. In the month of Sept at our camp we only saw 3 and I just spoke with the gun groups in camp and no luck yet since the opener. Makes you question what has changed?

Maybe the cancellation of the spring bear hunt years ago leading to the amazing jump in the bear population has something to do with moose numbers being down----the tree huggers will tell you that bears are cute.cuddly honey eating lay-abouts but I know better-----I heard somewhere that a 60% mortality rate for moose calves can be attributed to predation by bears-----go figure!

I forgot to mention the 25 chickens we got in the first 4 days. I also know how wonderful the Wawa/Chapleau weather can be as I come up here for work every once in a while. I am from Northern Southern Ontario from your perspective..SSM ;)

We really did have fun and made the best of the obstructions like the weather and cidiots. Local knowledge was on our side as one of our gang lives in town and all but me used to live there. I am the foreigner in the pile. ;)

Does anyone else find that the majority of the tags for this area goes "down south"?

Might be a reflection of the number of southerners applying for tags. Denser population in the south may be the explanation.

Its just the numbers.

12 million in S. Ontario and about 800,000 of us north or the french and mattawa rivers. We are less than 10% of the pop.

So of the 95,000 people applying for Moose tags, only 8500 or so would be from the North. I believe the tags available this year was around 12,000, meaning around 10,500 of them went to Southern Ontario residents, (extra 5% held for Northern Resident draw).

Doesn't matter where you live, same odds really, aside from the 5% Northern draw, which only equates to 5-600 tags of 12000. The Northerners still have to be in pool 1 to get the extra draw tags.

yea the weather sucked big time but had a great time.we teamed up with another camp this year and have nothing but good things to say about that.also fogducker, futurehunter and myself managed to get a good sized cow and a ton of grouse
