The action, the stock, "Remington" molded into the mag in huge font, the ugly bolt handle with an "R" molded into it.. no thanks. I'll give you one thing, the action in the 783 felt smooth. So.. there's that.

Friend of mine got a 783 in 30-06, it only seems capable of 2MOA groups, the bolt feels very awkward due to long rotation and a loose feeling when extracting. The stock feels like rubbish.
But it was less then half of what I paid for my x-bolt so I guess you get what you pay for.

I have one in .308, and it's by far my favourite rifle I own. I only have one that will shoot better groups, and believe it or not, that's a t/c venture in 30-06.
I like all my guns, and won't part with any of them, but if I have to pick a worst, I'd have to go with my 70's BAR, and that's only because I've shot daisy BB guns that group better. Don't get me wrong, it's a good deer gun, but I haven't found anything to feed it that will shoot better than 2"

They are nice rifles... looked at a few. I might just buy one.
I mentioned earlier that a Kel Tec sub2000 was the worst I've owned, and that is true.
However, I forgot to mention a Remlin stainless model 1895... too many deficiencies to list. Turned me off to Remington and Marlin ever since. I still own an 870 marine magnum, which has been fine, but that will be my limit to Remington products.
Worst rifle I ever bought was a Lakelander 375 in 6.5x55. These are a Norwegian or Swedish made rifle (depends on where you get your info) similar or maybe identical to the Kongsberg, or maybe made by Kongsberg. Information on these is spotty and contradictory. Rounds wouldn't stay in the mag, the trigger guard was plastic and cracked. Poor wood to metal fit, an all around poorly built rifle. I expected a lot more from a European rifle. No "European craftsmanship" in this one. It didn't stick around long.

Find a nice Norwegian K98 (Kongsberg postwar refurb)... that will restore you faith in a quality, great shooting Norwegian rifle.
What was your issue witht the XCR? I hear either really good things about them or really bad it seems
It might tighten up with heavier bullets, we've only put 125grains in it so far
Mine likes Speer 165gr BTSP...spits those into a nickle at 100m.
The bolt throw is 90 degrees which is typically for a 2 lug bolt, you have just been spoiled with your Abolt and it's 3 lug design lol.
Stock is on the better side of the other cheapo synthetic stocks. It's pretty much the same stiff type polymer used in Vanguard S2's. Miles ahead of the Axis/American which are the same flimsy material as each other. They also have a decent recoil pad which the Axis/American are lacking. Even the hybrid mags are fairly durable, and I don't see them falling apart like the Axis/American are known to do.
In the end it's not perfect, but it checks off many of the necessary boxes for me...and it's a sub $400 gun most places.
It's my next pick down under the Howa/Vanguards which are pretty solid rifles.

Remington 788 in .22-250. Didn't pay very much, the dealer said he got it as a trade-in and hadn't had time to look it over thoroughly and test it. It keyholed rounds at 25 yards when I first shot it but that was quickly and easily fixed by cleaning for copper fouling. Turned out to be a very good shooter, but I didn't really care for the cartridge so I sold it for $25 more than I had paid.

Tried the 783 again, this time with 150 grains, got a group just a bit less then 2moa. I guess that's what my buddy is stuck with then.
Maybe some more premium type ammo would help, but my xbolt will do around 1moa with the same brand

Okay, so after reading all of this I feel obligated to respond. I have been shooting, reloading and buying and selling firearms for 50 years. I have owned approx. 100 firearms of various
makes, models and calibers over this time. For the last couple of decades varmint hunting has been my thing. By far the worst rifle I have ever owned was a Ruger American .22-250 in 2015.The stock would flex just looking at it, the trigger was crap, the finish and bluing was a joke-it would rust just because, accuracy was non existent and after trying three, yes three factory supplied magazines ( warranty) it never would feed properly. Sold, and will never buy another Ruger. Have owned several other Ruger rifles and non of them ever could come close to the 700s or Tikkas that I own.
