Worth Buying A Winchester Model 70 Before....

Do you have a link where it says that someone overseas is taking over production of the Model 70? Everything I have read says that the Model 70, 94, and 1300 are done. I ordered one on the weekend just in case.

No.

I thought I had read on this forum that it was going overseas. Japan, Portugal etc......

I could very well be wrong......

I read in the business section of the Toronto Star (authoritative?), that U.S. Repeating Arms Factory in USA was shutting down/ending production. I think Belgium or Japan was mentioned as continuing although I may be thinking of the previous posts.

If production of the M70 was to move to Japan, this would probably improve quality as long as they refrain from making major design changes. Regards, Bil.

USRA has the rights to the winchester name for one more year, or part thereof. they have said they will close the factory. what happens after that is anyones guess. some have speculated that olin will produce rifles overseas and they sell them. if they produce in japan the quality will probably go up. the town would like for someone else to buy the plant and keep the name but i don't really see why anyone would want to do that. if the plant closes and production starts overseas then the us made guns will probably be more valuable to collectors down the road.

i just bought a m-70 in .222 rem for the simple fact that you will never be able to get that quality any more. IMHO I wouldn't buy a foreing rifle unless it was a CZ or Tikka

Winchester Ain't Goin' Away!

There'll still be plenty of Winchester rifles around even if they close that factory. ;) Personally, I think it's an announcement to bring their labour strife under control. Failing that they can always move production "off shore" and "assembly" to a more labour friendly State [like Arizona]...

Don't believe that Winchester rifles are going to disappear in the short term... :D

Maybe this is just a burn job Herstal is doing to the workers' pensions etc. The plant may reopen under new management, non union, well that's just my view from the grassy knoll.

I hope your right. It would be a real shame if we couldn't get any more new M-70's. To me a M-70 epitomizes what a hunting rifle should be. I don't care where they make them as long as production doesn't cease altogether.
