I recently acquired a Romanian m44 from 1955, the barrel and everything is in great shape the only thing is little scratches on the stock, etc. Im just wondering if I should refinish the stock?

I don't want to remove any wood, just the finish and re apply a coat of wax or something. I watched a video of a guy using "Methylated Spirits" to clean his and it looks pretty good.

So any ideas are welcome.

ps kinda hooked on the Mosin bit also got a 1935 Izhevsk hex receiver

Thanks in advance

One of the rarer versions of the M44. After you refinish the rifle a good portion of its "collectability" disappears and it becomes another refinished rifle.

Clean it, love it as it is. If you're looking for a pretty m44, I'm sure someone here would take the Romanian off your hands and you can buy one of the blond Polish versions that are floating around.

I wouldn't use anything that may harm the original finish to clean the stock. The dents and scratches just add character to me. Sanding or refinishing the stock will most likely just decrease the value.

I'm not a big Mosin guy, but I think the Romanian M44's are fairly uncommon. I say leave it as is.

Can I at least use the steam cleaner to get the rest of the cosmoline? :)

I wasn't aware that it was an uncommon and I don't want to do anything to damage the rifle or it's value.
I don't know what the original method was but was there anything done to clean and protect the stock by the soldiers?

Wait... Soldiers cleaned their Mosins? I thought throwing it in the river and shooting the crud out with riverbed-bore-paste was the Red Army procedure. Stocks likely got dried out on the exhaust manifold of a T-34 or similar.

All joking aside, I'm not sure the Russians, or any of the USSR troops did much cleaning. Finns likely did though.

Its your rifle, do what you want, but don't hurt her too much. Can I ask, where did you find a Rommie at, I've yet to see one on this coast. Some pics would be nice. Enjoy. By the way, would you want to sell her, if so keep me in mind.:D

I picked her up from the Gun show in red deer on the 6h, I cant remember his name off hand but the guy I bought it from said he came from Winnipeg I believe and the rifle I got was 1 of 3.

Ill get some pics up when I'm back in town.

Methylated spirits is Wood alcohol. :D Might dissolve the finish if it's shellacked.
