Worth getting an AR-15 for 3gun?

With the passage of C-71, is it still worth my while getting an AR-15 for IPSC rifle, multigun and 3gun? Will I even be able to take it to the range, even if it's grandfathered in? Will they even be allowed in matches or are match rules expected to 'dumb down' the gun selection as to not give AR-15 owners 'unfair advantage'? Should I be looking at something else instead? Thanks for any info!

P.S. As far as I know, it's not on any official 'to prohibit' lists, but I also know the RCMP are just looking for an excuse to do it and this new bill will give them all the power they need.

Yes. Get one. If you're hesitant to cough up the cash, buy a stripped lower for now. Nobody knows what C-71 or any potential move to follow will specifically entail, so no point worrying about that - you will definitely get whatever use out of it that you want. What we DO know is that the more "AR-15s" that are registered to good, law-abiding owners, the more political sway we may have against any such actions.

Lol the plan was to get a couple of stripped lowers, unless I hear compelling arguments otherwise.. One as an extra, one as the base for a gradual build. Most likely will get back into the games with pistol only and snipe away at AR build parts as they become available on the cheap. Any sources for an all metal stripped lower on the cheap? I've been out of the game for a while.

Good luck finding anything at this late date; there's been a run on buying and a lot of stores sold out.

Probably best to get one complete gun if you can find one, or get one of the lower registrations upgraded to complete-rifle ASAP in case they freeze upgrades for lower-only owners.

Buy a PSA at 399.00 usd come up to 560.00 can.

Thanks! Placed the order and also ordered a stripped lower and a 15" tube.. Will hold off on a trigger/fixed stock for now. Any decent budget 1-4, 1-6 optics out there? (true 1, of course). I'm rebuilding my sporting gear from scratch, so the budget is a bit limited.

Edit: Are the LAR mags still a thing or what's being used in matches nowadays?

Some of the DSSMatch guys are running these budget PA scopes from CTCS. I've been pretty impressed with them for the price. https://ctcsupplies.ca/primary-arms-1-4x24mm-illuminated-riflescope/

Most are running LAR mags. The 10/30 ones are nice if you can find them and they were lanced correctly. If not, S&J Hardware has a deal on their excellent aluminum LAR mag extensions. https://sjhardware.com/product/mag-x-lar-mag-extension-single-sale/

Thanks.. That will speed up my build. Any recommendations on triggers? I'd like to save some cash over S3G if possible. I know Select has those Miculek adjustable ones. Are they any good? Any other decent budget options?

Your standard run of the mill AR trigger is pretty decent as is. Aftermarket triggers can be exceptional, but also carry exceptionally high price tags. If ur sort of on a budget my advice would be to try just a stock ar trigger for now and use the money saved to buy more critical performance enhancements like compensators, optics, personal gear, good magazines etc.

I ran an S3G on a rifle that I had to leave abroad and loved the feel. After the Miculek comp, it had the greatest impact on my stage times (other than improving the shooter, of course). The only issue with it was that it forced me to spend more money on ammo since I enjoyed shooting with it too much lol I may hold off on a trigger purchase

If you are just starting out, and don’t have much experience with building I would just wait and buy a stock AR. Having the lower is good and all, but a ban could look different than anyone anticipated. The ban politics don’t make sense.

Anyone I have seen without a serious working knowledge of AR’s that have built their guns have had equipment failures regularly. Which of course works out well for me lol. The timer doesn’t care if your buffer spring is too heavy or otherwise.

My suggestion, save up and buy a middle of the road AR, toss a Daniel defense muzzle rise mitigator on it. Put a 1-4 or comparable scope on it and don’t worry about race parts until you are faster than the gun. There is tons of money to spend on 3 gun.

Welcome to the arms race!

Have fun

Doesn't need to be an AR but it is an advantage.

If you have the money you could build yourself an Modern Sporter or MDI SLR that are ARish and NR....a MS is about a year long wait, SLR's are sometimes in stock

As for triggers, IMO they are the most important part of the build. If you're trying to budget (not sure your defination of budget) I would suggest buying a giessele BGRF-E from brownells, they are on sale right now. It would run you about $250cad to your door. They are under priced as far as I'm concerned. I own 2 of them + a triggertech diamond and a giessele SSA-E. The BGRF-E is comparable at a better price point.

Ok. Thanks

No it's not in the budget this point in my life anymore or next 16 - kids and expensive hobbies with accessories. Aside from the Glock 48 with upgraded sights this year it's been on th affordable side of things - china and turkey
