Would a Bushnell Banner hold up on an M14?

I have a Bushnell Banner 6-24x40AO and was wondering if this scope would hold up to the recoil of the M14....

Or would the elite 3200 10x40 be light years better? I just can't get past the fact that it's fixed power.... :D

Thanks

Yes probably. It's a cheap scope, but they tend to be quite robust. I wouldn't put it on anything that's all that much more potent, 308 - 30-06 is about the limit IMHO.

What you're really sacrificing with the banner is optical quality. It's a lower grade glass and not fully coated. Therefore, the picture will be slightly dimmer and a little blurrier - particularly near the edge or at the windage/elevation limits. Further it's a low number of elements - which is a GOOD thing - but it means there'll be chromatic (orange/purple 'halo') and geometric (pincushion/barrel) distortion, again moreso near the edges.

What you're NOT sacrificing with the banners is repeatability & zero - the clicks are accurate and hold reasonably well (especially compared to any scope in its price range, +/- 50%) They DO hold up very very well, to get a significantly more robust scope will cost you a LOT more $$$.

As far as the 3200 - yes, it's a MUCH better scope. Fixed power means fewer moving parts, which means a much better scope for less money (than a comprable quality variable scope).

Both are (IMHO) quite sufficient

I used my banner 6-18X50 on both my M305 and my .223 savage/stevens without trouble. After that it was on an ar-15 shooting decent groups at 3-400 yards, and has moved on since then.

I don't think it'll be a problem for your use, but the higher magnification might be better appreciated on a 223 bolt gun with it's potential for better accuracy at longer ranges.

Use it on either one...

I use a couple banners, and they serve me fine. There's a 6-18x50 on my Hornet, which is entirely satisfactory. The cartridge is only good to 200m or less and barely recoils at all. I have no real need for an expensive scope on this gun. Likewise the 4-12x40 on my 22lr. I have a banner on my 7mm08, but that's only temporary. It works fine, but I don't really trust if for 'serious' hunting work. Likewise, I had one on my 308 for a while, but it got replaced. Generally, I like them fine for 'plinking' guns where accuracy isn't paramount (3-4" 200 yard groups are perfectly acceptable), and neither is it used for critical applications where you might only get one shot - like hunting. For long range varmint rigs, I equip more expensive glass with high magnification, AO and mildots. For hunting guns I usually get a fixed objective lower power variable scope, like a Leupy VX2 or Burris Fullfield.

So - just IMHO - a banner is perfectly acceptable for your 305, if (as I assume is the case) you're not looking for: long range shooting - >300yds; bug-hole accuracy; or hunting.
